In just one model generation, it's cemented itself as one of the most popular small premium SUVs. That's partially thanks to its handsome, understated design, and partly down to its calm, sensible user experience.

Volvo XC40 models explained

Since its arrival in late 2017, the XC40 has remained on sale with few major changes. All models are five-seaters with five doors – the hatchback-style bootlid being counted as the fifth opening.
For several years, the XC40 was the smallest SUV in the Volvo lineup – not to mention its smallest car full stop once the V40 hatchback went off sale in 2019. In 2024, however, the compact Volvo EX30 EV launched, once again making the XC40 Volvo's second-smallest model. Above it sits the brand's larger SUVs – the five-seat Volvo XC60, and the seven-seat Volvo XC90 and EX90.
There's no shortage or talented competitors in this segment. Its direct rivals are the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA and Range Rover Evoque. Other alternatives include the Mini Countryman, Lexus UX, Alfa Romeo Tonale, Cupra Formentor and Jaguar E-Pace.
Volvo EX40/XC40 Recharge

Volvo makes a fully electric version of the XC40. This was originally called the XC40 Recharge when it launched in 2020, but was later renamed to EX40 to line up with the rest of Volvo's electric range. The renaming also helped ease confusion with plug-in hybrid models, which were also sold under the XC40 Recharge name.
Volvo EC40/C40 Recharge

In 2021, Volvo launched the electric-only C40 Recharge. This is a coupe version of the XC40, using mostly the same body and structure but with a roofline that curves dramatically downwards past the rear passengers. This model was later renamed EC40 alongside the EX40.

What's the best Volvo XC40 model?

The XC40 lineup is fairly broad. You'll find everything from affordable 1.5-litre petrol models with pedestrian performance, to a dual-motor electric version with more than 400hp. Strong sales across its near decade-long sales run means there's plenty of choice on the used market. At the time of writing, there are several low-mileage used XC40 cars available from Motorpoint for less than £20,000.
All versions are easy and calming to drive. Most models have a decent amount of power, but feel best when driven sedately. Everyday driving is also where the XC40's suspension does its best work, tuning out much of the road's harshness. The high seating position and tall windows also mean excellent visibility, which inspires confidence on the move.
If you've decided you fancy an XC40, the most important choice will be what its powered by. Drivers who mostly cover mixed motoring will be best suited to the petrol version, while used diesel cars are more suited to high-mileage drivers. PHEV and electric versions can substantially cut your running costs if you can charge at home.
