Alfa Romeo Tonale buying guide

What Alfa Romeo Tonale trim levels are there?

Entry-level Tonales come in Ti trim and are generously equipped. You get 18-inch alloy wheels, climate control, all-round parking sensors, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, auto lights and wipers, and a powered boot lid. You also get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Veloce is the upgraded trim and gets larger alloys and moody black detailing on the exterior. You also get adaptive suspension and aluminium shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Speciale trim has now been discontinued but previously sat between Ti and Veloce models, with its own dramatic 20-inch alloy wheel design.

Alfa Romeo Tonale interior and technology

The Tonale's cabin layout is broadly similar to key rivals. There's a central dash-top infotainment screen with key controls for climate, drive modes and stereo volume scattered below it. Another screen behind the steering wheel takes the place of traditional speed and rev counter dials. Neat stitched panelling, eyeball-style vents and aluminium-effect trim help lift the ambiance, as does the heavily sculpted sports steering wheel.

Alfa's infotainment system includes all the main functions you'd expect in a modern car – most importantly standard-fit Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Despite the availability of smartphone mirroring, the Tonale's own software isn't too tricky to operate, with fairly fuss-free graphics and obvious on-screen shortcuts – though it's disappointing Alfa didn't flip these over to the other side of the screen for right-hand-drive cars. The digital driver's dials are, similarly, fairly easy to read thanks to a relatively restrained amount of on-screen clutter.

Most family buyers will have enough space in the Tonale. There's room for tall adults up front and enough rear legroom to allow you to manoeuvre a bulky child seat into position. If you're carrying tall adults in back, they'll find their legs have enough space but their heads might brush the ceiling thanks to the car's slightly sloped roofline. Mild-hybrid Tonales can carry 500 litres of cargo, while PHEV versions trade away some underfloor space for a 385-litre total – this should be enough for a pushchair or a week's holiday luggage.

Alfa Romeo Tonale engine range explained

Alfa Romeo Tonale 1.5 MHEV petrol

The range kicks off with a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, with a fuel-economy boost courtesy of a mild-hybrid system. With 160hp and a standard seven-speed automatic gearbox, this version dispatches the 0-62mph run in a respectable 8.8 seconds – enough that it won't feel laboured getting up to fast motorway speeds. Drive more sedately and you should be able to average around 45mpg.

Alfa Romeo Tonale 1.3 PHEV plug-in hybrid

If you have access to an EV charger at home or at work, the Tonale PHEV can dramatically cut your fuel costs. Between the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine and the plug-in-hybrid setup, you get a healthy 280hp and a zippy 0-62mph time of just 6.2 seconds – quicker than some proper hot hatches. However, use the 15.5kWh battery pack carefully and you can average as much as 217mpg, or travel a little over 30 miles on electric power alone. Recharging fully from a standard 7kW wallbox-style EV charger takes 2.5 hours.

Alfa Romeo Tonale FAQs

The Tonale is just over 4.5 metres long. That places it in the same ballpark as cars like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, although the Alfa is just a hair longer than those models. The size unlocks a decent amount of passenger space in the first and second row, although very tall rear passengers might find their heads get close to the car's curved roofline.

Front and rear parking sensors plus a reversing camera are fitted as standard, however, so parking the Tonale in tight spots shouldn't be too challenging.

Mild-hybrid Tonale models have a 500-litre boot. That's a respectable figure in this class and means enough space for big shopping trips or a bulky pushchair.

Plug-in-hybrid Tonales trade a little underfloor space to their battery packs, bringing their total figure down to 385 litres. That's probably still enough for most people, provided you don't have lots of child-carrying gear or big pets.

There's just two engines to pick from and your choice should be guided mainly by your budget and by how easily you can access an EV charger.

For buyers with tighter purse strings, the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid Tonale is a bit more affordable and can simply be treated as a regular petrol car. You don't need to recharge it and can just refuel as normal. With 160hp and an automatic gearbox, performance is respectable all the way up to motorway speeds.

The plug-in-hybrid model is noticeably more powerful, with 280hp and a six-second 0-62mph time. However, the ace up its sleeve is the 15.5kWh battery pack, which means an electric range of around 30 miles or a claimed combined 217mpg if you recharge often. You'll need access to an EV charger at home or at work to make the most of the setup, but a full recharge from a 7kW wallbox only takes around 2.5 hours.

Tonale models equipped with the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine are front-wheel drive. Considering they're mainly used for on-road driving, most buyers won't miss four-wheel drive and will find they get better economy and performance in the real world. If you live somewhere that experiences poor winter weather, consider fitting a set of winter tyres during the colder seasons, which are a much more effective way to ensure all-weather grip and traction.

Upgrading to the plug-in-hybrid Tonale adds an electric motor to the rear axle, giving the car four-wheel drive. This will somewhat improve grip and traction across poor surfaces compared to front-wheel-drive models, but isn't a substitute for fitting proper winter tyres should weather conditions demand.

Plug-in-hybrid versions of the Alfa Romeo Tonale with a full battery can cover a claimed 38 miles on electric power alone. In the real world, you can expect this figure to be closer to 30 miles.

Fully recharging the 15.5kWh battery pack from a standard 7kW EV wallbox charger takes around 2.5 hours.
