There are now more than 38,000 public EV charging locations across the UK, with more than 110,000 individual charging points*.

Considering there are fewer than 9,000 petrol stations, it’s never been easier to top up your electric car when you’re on the go.

What is public charging?

Public charging is where you use a publicly available charge point to recharge your EV. Drivers often use public charging for covering longer journeys, alongside charging at home for their day-to-day driving.

Virtually all EVs apart from a few early models use the same charging connector. That means you can be confident your car will connect to any public charge point and start charging.

Public charging costs

Charging your EV in public is more expensive than charging at home. Average UK electricity prices mean charging at home costs around 25p per kWh, versus 76p per kWh for a public fast charger. Public chargers are often priced according to the speed they deliver, so slower points are often cheaper than faster locations.

The speed and convenience of public charging means it’s usually good value for drivers when they’re travelling longer distances. Many modern EVs can use fast charging to jump from 10-80% in half an hour or less.

For comparison, home charging costs less than 30p per kWh, or as little as 7p per kWh with an EV-specific tariff.
