The 10 fastest charging electric cars

Today's EVs charge so quickly, you'll barely have time for a rest stop before they're topped up and ready to go again.

We've pulled together the 10 fastest-charging EVs available to buy in the UK at the time of writing. The EV market moves extremely quickly, however, so don't be surprised if even faster cars launch in the near future.

XPeng G6

XPeng G6 in orange
  • Max charge rate – 451kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 12 minutes

The XPeng G6 is the first car from the Chinese EV startup to reach UK shores. Its time here can be measured in months, but the brand is about to release an updated model with an astonishing 451kW charge rate – up from the respectable 280kW achieved by existing versions. Granted, there are only a handful of chargers in the UK that get close to that kind of output, but it won't be long before these speeds are more widely available, and the G6 will be there to benefit from it. At full blast, you'll recover the standard 10-80% fast charge in just 12 minutes.

Lotus Emeya

Lotus Emeya in grey
  • Max charge rate – 443kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 13.6 minutes

Traditionalists probably won't love the Lotus Emeya – a 2.5-tonne luxury electric saloon from a brand historically associated with lightweight sports cars. While the Emeya certainly isn't your grandfather's Lotus, it has some seriously impressive specs in its own right. Most obviously, a recent update that brought max charge speed up to a searing 443kW, dropping the benchmark 10-80% boost to just over 13 minutes. That means you can recover most of the car's 379-mile total range before you've had time to finish your coffee.

BMW iX3

BMW iX3 in white
  • Max charge rate – 400kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 21 minutes

The new BMW iX3 is an important yardstick for the brand. It's not only the first model from its 'Neue Klasse' of vehicles with thoroughly overhauled styling and technology, but it's also the first EV on sale in the UK to crest 500 miles of range. That's enough to get from Land's End to John O'Groats with just one charging stop. You'd better make it a quick stop too, as the iX3 needs just 21 minutes to jump from 10-80% if you can find a powerful enough charger. All that's before you consider the comfy, contemporary cabin and swift, hushed performance.

MG IM5

MG IM5 in blue
  • Max charge rate – 396kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 17 minutes

IM is a new luxury sub-brand that'll be sold with MG badging in the UK. Using the latest EV tech from its parent company, SAIC, IM will launch in the UK with the IM5 four-door coupe and the IM6 SUV. Both cars achieve an impressive 396kW charge speed, which means a benchmark 10-80% charge takes just 17 minutes. IM's lineup will dramatically undercut its main rivals, with the top-spec IM5 100 Performance costing £10,000 less than the Tesla Model 3 Performance, as well as outgunning it with a whopping 751hp.

Porsche Taycan

Porsche Taycan in blue
  • Max charge rate – 320kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 18 minutes

Compared to the many cutting-edge models on this list, the Porsche Taycan is a little long in the tooth having first launched in 2019. A recent thorough overhaul has substantially boosted the Taycan's range and charging performance. Max charge speed is now 320kW, enabling a 10-80% jump in just 18 minutes and, with big-battery models covering more than 400 miles on a full charge, this is an EV that makes long-distance trips very easy. Did we mention it's blisteringly fast too? Even entry-level cars will readily embarrass most sports cars.

Mercedes CLA

Mercedes CLA in blue
  • Max charge rate – 320kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 22 minutes

Mercedes has decided to jettison most of its small cars from its lineup, with models like the A-Class hatch and B-Class MPV not expected to be renewed. The CLA four-door coupe, however, retains a spot in the three-pointed-star lineup, with the latest model launching as both a long-range electric car and as a mild-hybrid for drivers who want to refuel. Thanks to Mercedes' latest battery tech, the new CLA can hit an impressive 320kW peak charge rate, which means a 10-80% charge in just 22 minutes.

Audi A6 Sportback e-tron

Audi A6 Sportback e-tron in beige
  • Max charge rate – 270kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 21 minutes

Audi offers both fuel-powered and battery-powered A6s, with the latter marked out by its e-tron branding. Unlike older A6 models, the new e-tron is a five-door, with a boot lid that lifts with the rear windscreen, giving excellent access to its spacious cargo area. Passenger accommodation is equally impressive, with lots of room for front and rear occupants to lounge about. The space is handy too, considering your passengers will only have 21 minutes to stretch out while you grab a 10-80% recharge at up to 270kW. Audi's e-tron – really just a rebadged Porsche Taycan – does slightly pip the A6 with a 320kW charge rate.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai Ioniq 5 in blue
  • Max charge rate – 260kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 18 minutes

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 already made a strong impression before anyone had a chance to check out its tech specs. Its strong, geometric '80s styling still looks sharp today, while its minimal, spacious and elegantly trimmed cabin is still one of the nicest places to spend time on the road. Latest versions can charge at up to 260kW, which means a 10-80% charge can be recovered in just 18 minutes from a suitably powerful charger. That enables a long driving range in regular models, or a few more hot laps if you're driving the bonkers 650hp Ioniq 5 N.

Kia EV6

Kia EV6 in red
  • Max charge rate – 258kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 18 minutes

The Kia EV6 is something of a sister car to the Ioniq 5, using mostly the same battery and motor tech. You might not spot it from the outside, however, considering the Kia's much more modern look, with thin, beady headlights and a squat stance. Most of the same benefits as the Ioniq 5 apply to the EV6, like the strong passenger space and the hushed, refined driving experience. Its 258kW max charge speed is effectively the same as the Ioniq 5 and returns the same 18-minute 10-80% charge time.

Polestar 3

Polestar 3 in grey
  • Max charge rate – 250kW
  • Charge time – 10-80% in 30 minutes

The Polestar 3 is another luxury electric SUV using tech from Chinese giant, Geely. Unlike its Volvo cousins, however, the Polestar is a little sportier, with taut body control and more agile handling. Despite this entertaining edge, the 3 is a wonderful car to cover long distances in thanks to its supple ride quality and calm, fuss-free interior design. Its 250kW max charge rate is respectable by today's standards, although the 30-minute 10-80% charge time isn't quite as rapid as models higher up this list – partially thanks to the massive 111kWh battery.
