If you went on holiday to Spain in the 1980s, you might have hired a car that looked a lot like an old Fiat Panda wearing SEAT badges. That’s because it was an old Fiat Panda wearing SEAT badges. Back then SEAT – founded only in 1950 – was owned by the Spanish state, with a name that had nothing to do with chairs and stood instead for Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo. The government-owned car maker also had a partnership with – you guessed it – Fiat.

Things changed when Volkswagen bought out the Spanish government’s stake, and started bringing SEATs to the UK in the mid-1980s. Compared with sensible-shoes Volkswagens, SEATS offered both Mediterranean flair and better value for money, with the bonus that really they were much like those sensible-shoes Volkswagens underneath – the electrics, the engines and gearboxes, and all the other stuff it’s probably best to leave to those clever German engineers.

That’s still the formula to this day, with a range of SEAT hatchbacks, crossovers and SUVs that share much with their German cousins, but just look, well, a bit more up for staying out until 2am with a whistle and some glow sticks. Prices are often in the same ballpark as VWs, but you tend to get more kit thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Despite all the highly appealing fun factor, there’s as much head as heart involved in buying a SEAT. There are frugal petrol and diesel engines to choose from, plus also the fully electric Mii city car, and plug-in hybrid electric drivetrains offered on the super-sharp Leon. You can even bag a seven-seat SEAT SUV these days, the Tarracco, so big families can join the fun.

Whatever your car-shaped needs, there’s sure to be nearly new SEAT that’s perfect for you at Motorpoint.
