Geely looks to inject a premium model into its range with the plug-in-hybrid Monjaro SUV.
The Geely Monjaro has been launched to Europe at the Paris Motor Show. It's a plug-in-hybrid SUV that will be Geely's flagship car, sitting above the brand's Starray and EX5 models.
It’s named after Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Well, that’s the case for export markets; in Geely’s home market, it’s named the Xingyue L, with ‘xingyue’ meaning ‘star cross’.
Whatever it’s called, the Geely Monjaro is launching in the UK very shortly. However, it has been on sale in China since December 2023. That might be why it looks like it’s due a facelift already.
New Geely Monjaro interior
The interior tech looks to be up to date, with a 15.4-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and the option of a 25.6-inch head-up display. We'll have to see whether such a big HUD might block your forward vision at difficult junctions. Geely says the cabin is designed around the principle of 'technology should reduce the number of things the driver has to think about, rather than add to them'.
Equipment includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus heated seats and a voice recognition system that understands 18 languages and 600 functions. From the options list, you can pay extra to have massaging seats, cooled seats and a 16-speaker, 1,000W Flyme sound system.
The whole gamut of driver assistance tech will come as standard, including a 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Euro NCAP hasn't crash-tested the Monjaro yet, but Geely expects a five-star score.
Black, brown or beige upholstery is available, alongside the five exterior colour choices: gold, white, blue, black and grey.
The interior promises to be nice and quiet. Joining double-glazed front windows are 'acoustic materials covering approximately 89% of the cabin' (how that's measured, we have no idea) and '23 airtightness optimisations'. Apparently, tyre noise has been reduced by 45%.
Geely Monjaro dimensions
The Monjaro measures 4,770mm long, 1,895mm wide (excluding mirrors) and 1,689mm tall, with a 2,845mm wheelbase.
Boot space stands at an impressive 633 litres, rising to 1,532 litres with the seats folded. There are said to be 34 interior storage compartments and you can apparently carry things that are up to 2.8 metres long.
Engine and specifications
In terms of performance, the Monjaro looks set to inherit a similar EM-i plug-in-hybrid powertrain as the Starray. The total power output is 238hp – less than the Starray – with most of that likely to be injected by the electric motor. So it won’t be wildly powerful like the Omoda 9, and will focus on providing a more relaxed driving experience.
We're told the Monjaro provides 'confidence' in everyday driving and in more demanding conditions, such as in wet weather and over challenging terrain. The car is set up to deliver a 'balanced driving character', with stability in corners and at speed being a key aim.
You can pick from front-driven or four-wheel-drive options. The latter unlocks the option of Continuous Damping Control (CDC) suspension, which responds to impacts in a fifth of the time it takes to blink. There are Comfort, Standard and Sport settings for the suspension. Front-wheel-drive cars come with four driving modes (pure, hybrid, power and snow) while all-wheel-drive cars additionally get modes for off-road and sand driving.
Details on range and charging are limited although, if the Starray is anything to go by, we expect an electric-only range of at least 50 miles from the Monjaro. When both the petrol tank and battery pack are full up, you should have a total range of around 600 miles. The Monjaro does offer vehicle-to-load, turning it into a power pack for small appliances, and has a towing capacity of 1,500kg.
The Monjaro will benefit from Geely’s eight-year/125,000-mile warranty, which covers both the vehicle and the battery pack. Additonally, four years of roadside assistance is being offered to UK buyers.
