The Geely EX5 is an electric SUV with plenty to appreciate.
Despite being a newcomer to the UK, Geely is a massive global powerhouse. Its first electric SUV to be sold here, the EX5, is comfortable, well equipped, well priced and comes with a long warranty.
However, there are plenty of talented electric SUVs that you could consider instead – here are the best cars that are like a Geely EX5.
Skoda Enyaq

Better than the Geely EX5 for: boot space
The EX5 has a very spacious interior, but its 461-litre boot (including a 51-litre space under the boot floor) is on the small side for the size of the car. For family holidays or maximising your time at Ikea, the EX5 might feel a bit of a squeeze – in which case, check out the Skoda Enyaq. Its 585-litre boot is among the biggest you’ll find of any electric SUV, and there’s room for your charging cable beneath the boot floor too. What’s more, the Enyaq is immensely handy, with lots of hooks, pockets and ‘Simply Clever’ features to make daily life easier.

Peugeot e-3008

Better than the Geely EX5 for: style
It seems like Geely totally forgot to style the EX5 – it’s one of the blandest-looking cars we’ve seen in recent years. While a subjective matter, we’d say the Peugeot e-3008 is one of the most eye-catching electric SUVs, with its intricate front end and boldly creased bodywork. Check out our picks for the best-looking electric cars if you want a stylish car with no engine emissions.

Citroen e-C3 Aircross

Better than the Geely EX5 for: simplicity
Like a lot of Chinese cars, the EX5’s interior is dominated by a large touchscreen with more processing power than Microsoft. If all you want to do is connect your phone to the car and listen to the radio or a podcast, the EX5 and its contemporaries might feel too complicated. The touchscreen in the Citroen e-C3 Aircross (and the related Vauxhall Frontera) is stripped back to the essentials, letting you get on with driving. We also like the e-C3 Aircross’ focus on value, comfort and interior space.

Toyota bZ4X

Better than the Geely EX5 for: warranty
There aren’t many cars that offer a longer period of warranty cover than the Geely EX5’s eight-year/125,000-mile package – it’s a top choice if you want total peace of mind. But Toyota will warranty its bZ4X for up to 10 years and 100,000 miles if you keep the car serviced at a main dealer. Even if the car hasn’t been to Toyota religiously for its maintenance, every visit will nab you a year’s cover.

Kia EV3

Better than the Geely EX5 for: range
Every EX5 comes with a 60kWh battery, which enables a maximum range of 255 miles (slightly more if you stick with the entry-level SE model with its smaller wheels). In our time with the EX5, we saw efficiency that would equate to 220 miles of real-world driving. That’s plenty if you can charge regularly and only do the occasional longer journey, but it lags behind the best EVs you can buy now. We’d pick the Kia EV3, because lightly used examples in a high-spec trim level broadly match the price of a new EX5. The Kia’s bigger battery option gives you up to 375 miles between charges – more than enough to banish range anxiety for good. Check out our guide to the cheapest long-range electric cars here.
There’s also the larger Kia EV5 if you need more space than the EV3 offers.

Changan Deepal S05

Better than the Geely EX5 for: material quality
The Changan Deepal S05 follows the same formula as the EX5 – its airy interior gives you a massive screen, two phone trays and not many physical buttons. To our prodding fingers, the S05 felt slightly more plushly upholstered than the EX5, with more areas of soft-touch materials and contrast stitching. The S05’s frameless doors gave a premium first impression, too; it’s a small thing but notable.

Audi Q4

Better than the Geely EX5 for: premium badge
Geely’s badge isn’t just unfamiliar, it also looks like a spreadsheet. Not what you want to see when you’re trying to forget about work for the weekend. For something with a more familiar badge – and something that’s obviously a premium product – we’d recommend the Audi Q4. Available as a standard SUV and a sleeker Sportback model, the Q4 impresses with an intuitive interior, family-friendly practicality and a range of over 300 miles for big-battery versions.

Renault Scenic

Better than the Geely EX5 for: being able to easily turn the ADAS off
A Google infotainment system, a big boot, a 379-mile range and lots of equipment make the Renault Scenic E-Tech one of our favourite family SUVs. It’s also blissfully easy to turn off some of the driver assistance systems – once you’ve set your preferences, you can turn off multiple systems with just a couple of button presses. In the EX5, you’ve got to faff about with several touchscreen menus to get to the driver assistance screen – and the systems are more intrusive in the EX5 than in the Scenic.

Tesla Model Y

Better than the Geely EX5 for: performance
The EX5 is actually pretty nippy, and it’s one of the best-riding Chinese SUVs because it’s had some input from Lotus. But if you’re a speed freak, few cars will impress you as much as a Tesla. Long Range Model Ys manage 0-60mph in around five seconds (plus more than 350 miles of range), while the top-spec Performance model is positively unhinged with a Ferrari-beating 0-60mph time of just 3.3 seconds. Kachow.

Geely Starray

Better than the Geely EX5 for: having a petrol engine as a backup
If you’re sold on having a Geely but aren’t quite sold on the EX5’s middling electric range, the brand also sells a plug-in hybrid model. The Starray gives you up to 84 miles of zero-emission driving, but also the backup of a petrol engine for longer journeys. With both fuel tank and battery full, Geely reckons you’ll be able to travel for around 600 miles.
