Audi Q4 buying guide

About the Audi Q4

The Q4 is a stylish and premium family SUV. You might cross-shop a Q4 with cars such as the BMW iX1, Mercedes EQA and Volvo EX40, as well as the Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq – both of which share their underpinnings with the Q4.

Inside, the Q4 has a posher and more logical interior than either the Skoda or the VW, and it still comes with plenty of practicality – both for passengers and luggage.

What versions of the Audi Q4 are there?

There are two body styles of the Q4 – a standard SUV and a Sportback version, which is marked out by its eye-catching sloping roofline. The Sportback has more of a coupe look than the regular car, and doesn’t lose too much boot space either.

Sport is the first of three trim levels, followed by the more aggressively styled S Line and the moody Black Edition model.

What features does the Audi Q4 have?

The Audi Q4 boasts a fully digital instrument cluster and an easy-to-use 11.6-inch touchscreen. There’s the usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, letting you use your phone’s apps on the car’s screen, as well as built-in sat nav and online features.

Standard equipment includes heated front seats, adaptive cruise control and LED headlights.

Is the Audi Q4 a good car?

There are now plenty of electric SUVs to choose from, but the Audi Q4 should appeal thanks to its blend of futuristic, concept-car looks and familiar Audi interior quality and tech. The fact that most models manage over 300 miles between charges – and that they recharge fast – means that range anxiety should be a thing of the past.

Audi Q4 motor range explained

Audi Q4 35 e-tron 55kWh

Entry-level Q4s have a 52kWh (usable) battery and a 170hp electric motor, for a max range of 216 miles and acceleration from 0-62mph in nine seconds. This is fine for drivers who predominantly do short journeys or don’t mind charging more frequently.

Audi Q4 40 e-tron 82kWh

Common on the used market, the 40 model gets a 77kWh battery for a worthwhile increase in range. Up to 306 miles is possible between charges, while a power boost to 204hp brings the 0-62mph time down by half a second.

With power jumping up to 286hp, the 45 brings the 0-62mph dash down to about 6.5 seconds. Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system is optionally available here, bringing all-weather stability in exchange for a fractional decrease in range. Otherwise, the Q4 is rear-wheel drive.

A 340hp motor and four-wheel drive makes the range-topping Q4 very quick indeed – in fact, this powertrain is also used in the Skoda Enyaq vRS and Volkswagen’s sporty GTX range. The Audi doesn’t shout about its power, but its 0-62mph time of just 5.4 seconds means it’ll surprise many powerful sports cars. Range, like the 45 quattro, stands at about 320 miles.

Audi Q4 FAQs

While the Q3 is approaching 4.5 metres long, the Q4 is a little bigger, at almost 4.6 metres. The Q4 also has a longer wheelbase, freeing up more passenger space inside than the Q3. However, in the real world you’re unlikely to notice a massive difference in how large the Q3 feels versus the Q4.

We’d usually reserve the term ‘luxury car’ for Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, but the Q4 is a premium SUV that certainly feels more luxurious than something like a Skoda Enyaq or Tesla Model Y.

Every Q4 comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery pack, which protects you if the battery pack drops below 70% of its original usable capacity in that time. But EV batteries are lasting longer than you might think, and it’s likely that the battery will still be in a good condition in 10 or 15 years’ time.

Until April 2025 road tax is free on an Audi Q4. After that, a brand-new model will cost £10 in tax in the first year, and then the standard rate (currently £190) thereafter. Because every Q4 starts at more than £40,000, you’ll need to pay the ‘Expensive Car Supplement’ until the car is six years old, bringing the yearly tax total to around £600.

Yes, a reversing camera comes as standard, as do front and rear parking sensors.

A panoramic sunroof can be added to a new Q4 as an optional extra. You can add it as a standalone option for around £1,300, or pick the Technology Pack Pro option, which bundles in a sunroof – plus luxuries like upgraded lights, extra driver assistance tech and a Sonos sound system – for £4,500.

Yes, keyless entry and keyless start both come as standard in the Q4.
