Your guide to buying a Used BMW 2 Series

What engine and gear box options will I find on a second hand BMW 2 Series?

Two-door coupe and convertible versions of the first generation badged 218i are fitted with a three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine, while the 220i, 228i and 230i all get different twists on a 2.0-litre four-cylinder recipe. Stepping up to the M235i and M240i gets you BMW’s creamy smooth turbo straight-six engine. All these models are rear-wheel drive and have either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Active Tourer and Gran Tourer models share DNA with the Mini Countryman and Clubman. The 216i and 218i are offered with 1.5-litre three-cylinder engines, while 220i and 225i variants upgrade to 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines. The 225xe Active Tourer combines the 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor to drive the rear axle.

Active Tourer and Gran Tourer 2 Series models are mostly front-wheel drive with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes – the plug-in hybrid is an exception, being all-wheel drive.

The latest BMW 2 Series is available in three different guises – the four-door Gran Coupe, Active Tourer and two-door Coupe. The Gran Coupe and Active Tourer again share Mini DNA, this time with 1.5- or 2.0-litre petrol engines (including the high-performance M235i), or a 2.0-litre diesel. Front-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive versions are available with either manual or automatic gearboxes.

Despite being similar in concept to the Gran Coupe, the two-door Coupe is based on a completely different rear-wheel drive platform, so this is the choice for BMW purists. At the time of writing the new 2 Series coupe is available with either a 220i or (much punchier) 240i 2.0-litre petrol engine, or a 220d that’s equipped with a 2.0-litre turbodiesel.

What is the body style of a BMW 2 Series?

The first-generation BMW 2 Series is offered as a two-door coupe or convertible, and as two different people carriers – the five-seat Active Tourer and seven-seat Gran Tourer. The second-generation 2 Series is currently offered as either a four-door Gran Coupe or two-door coupe.

How many trim levels are available when buying a 2 Series BMW?

If you are buying a first-generation 2014-2021 coupe or convertible used BMW 2 Series, you will find SE, Sport and M Sport trims. Highlights of SE include 17-inch alloys, cloth upholstery, LED headlights and a multi-function steering wheel. Sport adds sports seats, ‘Corner’ cloth upholstery and a dark chrome exhaust. M Sport models play host to 18-inch alloys, cloth/Alcantara trim, sportier body styling and uprated sports suspension.

High-performance M235i/M240i models build on M Sport spec with uprated performance, braking and suspension.

Active Tourer and Gran Tourer buyers can choose from SE, Sport, Luxury and M Sport versions. SE offers 16-inch alloys, heated exterior mirrors and washer jets, rear parking sensors and cloth trim. Sport steps up to 17-inch alloys, sport seats and gloss black with Pearl Chrome finisher interior trim. Luxury puts the emphasis on sophistication with leather upholstery, chrome exterior trim and Fineline Stream wood interior finishers. Top-of-the-range M Sport features sports seats, 18-inch alloys, uprated suspension and anthracite headlining.

The four-door Gran Coupe is offered in either Sport or M Sport trim. Sport highlights include 17-inch alloys, sports seats, cruise control and sports exterior styling. M Sport upgrades to 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, M Sport bodykit and uprated suspension. The Active Tourer adds Luxury trim to that list, with 17-inch alloys, Oyster Vernasca leather and eucalyptus open-pore wood trim.

At the time of writing, the BMW 2 Series Coupe is offered in M Sport trim, with M Sport body styling, gloss-black exterior trim, 18-inch alloys and Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery.

Both the M235i Gran Coupe and M240i Coupe build on M Sport foundations with uprated performance, handling and braking.

What technology will I find in a second-hand BMW 2 Series?

First-generation coupe and convertible models are fitted with a 6.5-inch colour display screen (controlled by the rotary iDrive controller next to the gear stick), and benefit from DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity as standard. All Active Tourer/Gran Tourer models have sat-nav, Bluetooth and DAB as standard.

The Gran Coupe and second-generation Active Tourer feature BMW Live Cockpit Plus as standard, which includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Upgrading to M Sport specification (currently standard spec for the 2-series Coupe) ups the ante to BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen and BMW’s new Operating System 7.0.
