Suzuki SUV and car model range explained

Suzuki is known for its affordable and rugged small cars and SUVs. Which one fits the bill for you?

Excluding Toyota, Suzuki is one of the best-selling Japanese brands in the UK. Buyers love the brand’s cheap and simple cars, and its dependable SUVs. On a global scale, Suzuki accounts for nearly half of new car sales in India, and produces a wide range of completely different models for other markets, such as its home market. We’ll focus on the Suzuki cars you’re likely to find for sale at Motorpoint.

Suzuki SUV range

Suzuki Vitara

Arguably the most well-known Suzuki model in the UK, the Vitara is a compact SUV with the looks of a 4x4 and economical petrol engines. Many recent Vitaras come with a bit of electrification to reduce fuel consumption. Unlike many small SUV rivals, the Vitara does actually offer four-wheel drive (look for an AllGrip model if you want all-terrain capability). Lots of physical buttons make the car easy to use, and its tall shape boosts practicality.

Suzuki S-Cross

The S-Cross is slightly bigger than the Vitara, although the two cars are surprisingly closely matched. Like the Vitara, there are mild-hybrid ‘Boosterjet’ and full-hybrid engine options, and you can pick up a 4WD AllGrip model that'll improve grip on slippery roads. Top-spec Ultra trim gives you the AllGrip system, as well as nice-to-haves such as leather upholstery and a sunroof. Previously, this car was called the SX4 S-Cross.

Suzuki Across

Suzuki has an ongoing partnership with Toyota, which includes some rebadged models. The Suzuki Across is a slightly restyled Toyota RAV4, and comes with the same plug-in-hybrid powertrain as the top-spec RAV4. You might be surprised to find out that the four-wheel-drive Across comes with hot-hatch pace, over 40 miles of electric range, and features like a powered bootlid and a heated steering wheel. And, because it has a Suzuki badge on the front instead of a Toyota one, the Across is typically a chunk cheaper than a RAV4 PHEV.

Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny is cramped, noisy, not particularly good to drive, expensive… and brilliant. Bursting with charm that’ll leave a smile permanently imprinted on your face, the Jimny is a small but immensely capable off-roader. If your commute to the shops takes in a literal mountain, few cars will get your there and back like a Jimny. It only lasted two years on sale in the UK (2018-2020) due to emissions regulations, but it came back as the two-seat Jimny Commercial van.

Suzuki hatchback range

Suzuki Celerio

Sold until 2019, the Suzuki Celerio was a tiny and cheap city car. It’s worth considering if all you want is affordable and basic transport. Limited features and a simple engine means the Celerio should go on forever, and its light weight means it’s really economical. The Celerio is also a good shout if you want a car that's cheap to insure.

Suzuki Swift

A mainstay of the Suzuki range, Swift models have been on sale in the UK for decades. The latest version features an economical hybrid engine that’s capable of over 70mpg around town, and the Swift's handling is light and nimble. There’s quite a lot of standard equipment for a supermini, and the interior is intuitively laid out.

Suzuki Swift Sport

It’s a bit of a shame there’s no new Suzuki Swift Sport – the nameplate died when the last-generation Swift went off sale. In a world of hot hatches with monster power outputs and tricksy four-wheel-drive systems, the Swift Sport instead went for agility and driver engagement. The Swift Sport is fun at normal car speeds, and pleasingly cheap to run for a sporty car too.

Suzuki Ignis

Like the Jimny, the Suzuki Ignis is another car that’s more than the sum of its spec sheet. It’s tiny on the outside but spacious on the inside, giving you the ability to park easily and carry your mates into town. When it was on sale, the Ignis was one of the smallest cars to come with four-wheel drive – AllGrip versions are dogged and go further off-road than you might expect.

Suzuki Baleno

The Suzuki Baleno was a cheap and dependable hatchback which, size-wise, sits somewhere between the Ford Fiesta and Focus. It’s not the most obvious supermini choice, but now has some extra appeal with the introduction of Suzuki’s 10-year warranty – Baleno drivers can enjoy a year’s warranty if they have the car serviced at a main dealer, as long as the car is under 10 years old.

Suzuki estate range

Suzuki Swace

The Swace is a rebadged Toyota Corolla estate – in fact, if you peel off the Suzuki badge on the bootlid, you’d probably find a Toyota one underneath. The Swace uses the Corolla’s 1.8-litre hybrid engine which is easy-going, economical and long-lasting. There’s less choice of specs than in the Corolla range, but Swaces are usually a bit cheaper than the car they’re based on.

Suzuki electric car range

Suzuki e Vitara

In the Suzuki-Toyota partnership, Suzuki has been tasked with creating an electric car – which has resulted in the Toyota Urban Cruiser being a restyled version of the Suzuki e Vitara. Unusually for a small electric SUV, the e Vitara is available with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, coupled with proper off-road tech. There’s a lot to like here if you want a small, eco-friendly off-roader, or if you’re wedded to Suzuki, but it lags behind other small EVs for charging speed, practicality and infotainment quality.

Suzuki e Sky

Suzuki e Sky models

Japan’s kei car market – with a strict set of rules regarding the size of the car and how powerful it is – hasn’t translated to other markets. But kei cars are becoming reasonably popular as imports in the UK, and Honda has launched its kei-based Super-N. Which might have spurred Suzuki to bring the eSky to the UK. The eSky is reportedly launching in the UK in 2027 with a near-200-mile range and a footprint of under 3.4 metres.
