After a brief hiatus, MG is back on British roads. And no, this isn't the MG your grandfather knew.
The revived brand uses platforms, parts and technology from SAIC – one of China's largest automakers. As a result, modern MGs are easily the fastest and smartest cars ever to wear the MG badge.
This guide talks you through all the MG models you'll see on British roads. We'll look at widely available used cars along with the brand's latest models.
MG SUV range explained
MG ZS

MG's cheapest and smallest SUV isn't really small at all – but it is cheap. The ZS name has been used on an SUV since 2017, with this second-generation car launching in 2024. Behind its slightly forgettable styling, the ZS impresses with a spacious interior, a big boot and newly found refinement. The ZS, and in particular the hybrid, is really easy to live with and to drive; the hybrid manages 55mpg and its automatic gearbox takes the strain out of daily driving.

MG HS

The next step up in the MG SUV ladder is the extremely popular HS. It's still a five-seat SUV but it's longer and wider than the ZS, which means substantially more head and legroom for rear passengers, plus a much larger boot. If you're carrying kids in car seats and bulky pushchairs – or your relatives are all very tall – the HS's extra space makes the job a little easier. Ride comfort and material quality are better than you might expect for a car this affordable, and MG's also gone the same route as Mercedes and BMW by blending the central infotainment screen and driver's dials into one singular sweeping unit on top of the dashboard. There's a standard petrol engine if you need to keep the purchase price down, but we'd recommend going for one of the smooth, economical and refined hybrid options if you can.

MG S9

MG's largest model to launch in the UK is very big indeed. The S9 is nearly five metres long, and so there's plenty of space for seven adult-size seats. With everyone strapped in, you've still got over 300 litres of luggage space. Using the same plug-in-hybrid engine as the MG HS PHEV, the sizeable S9 manages over 60 miles on electric power with a fully charged battery. Given its size, powertrain and fancy styling, you might expect the S9 to be really expensive, but its £34k starting price makes it one of the cheapest seven-seaters on sale.

MG hatchback range explained
MG3

Of all MG's cars, the MG3 hatchback was most in need of a redesign and that's exactly what the latest MG3 has achieved. The new, sharp-suited body shares styling cues with the MG HS above and the cabin features many of the new fixtures and fittings from the MG4 EV. Under the bonnet, you'll find an automatic-only full-hybrid setup with an impressive 192hp. That means 0-62mph in a nippy eight seconds if you floor it, and up to 64mpg if you don't. There's also a normal petrol engine with a manual gearbox. While the first-generation MG3 traded on its cheapness, this one hits value for money – you're getting a much better car and it's still affordable relative to its rivals.

MG EV range explained
MG4

The MG4 launched a new era of electric models, based on a cutting-edge EV platform. Size-wise, it has a similar footprint to the Volkswagen Golf but looks a little taller in person because the battery pack lifts the floor height up. Cabin space is impressive – better than the fuel-powered Golf thanks to the more effective packaging pure EVs can achieve. Performance, handling and ride quality are all impressive, and all versions can return more than 200 miles from a full charge. The MG4 also shows off the company's latest cabin styling direction, feeling much more modern than its predecessors.

MG4 Urban

A completely new model with the same name as an existing model? Yep, kind of. As the name might suggest, the MG4 Urban is mainly aimed at drivers who'll use their car for short journeys. That means a smaller battery than the MG4 above, which in turn makes this car cheaper to buy and to run. It's actually slightly longer than the (suburban?) MG4, so there's plenty of space inside. And yet it's one of the cheapest EVs you can buy new.

MG5

While the younger, hotter MG4 gets all the attention, the MG5 EV makes for a sensational used car. This compact estate car doesn't have the most up-to-date styling inside or out but, like the rest of the MG lineup, it's one of the most affordable models in its class and comes with a list of standard equipment as long as your arm. Most models return a claimed range above 200 miles and prices on the used market regularly undercut similarly specced fuel-powered cars. This groundbreaking electric estate has also proved itself to be fantastically reliable, too.

MG S5

The MG S5 is the replacement for the ZS EV and sensibly uses the same platform as the MG4. This is an easy-going family car that gives you a spacious interior with intuitive controls and surprisingly plush-feeling materials. Comfort and refinement is good, and the whole car gives you that gooey satisfaction of everything working in harmony. Max range stands at 298 miles and acceleration is effortless.

MG S6

MG has you covered if you like the S5 but wish it had a bigger number on the bootlid. The S6 carries on the steadfast solidity of the S5 but adds more rear passenger space and boot space. Every S6 gets a 77kWh battery and a maximum quoted range of 329 miles, while the powertrain choice continues with a range-topping dual-motor car. Go for that one, and the restrained S6 can chomp from 0-62mph in just five seconds – that's sports car fast.

MG IM5

MG is looking to poach Tesla buyers with models that look very similar but have a different badge. The new IM sub-brand is MG's posh offering – think Audi to Volkswagen or Lexus to Toyota. It goes big on technology, with numerous driver aids, four-wheel steering and self-parking tech, and big on eye-catching statistics. Whether it's the quoted range of 441 miles, the ultra-rapid 10-80% charge time (just 17 minutes) or the supercar-matching acceleration, the slinky IM5 seems to tick a lot of boxes for a premium electric exec car.

MG IM6

The IM6 is the SUV version of the IM5, much like how similar the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are. So it's the perfect choice if you want more headroom and a larger boot than the IM5 offers – or a higher driving position. Like the IM5, the interior is full of screenage, and the one on the lower centre console is a quick access control centre so you don't need to sully the top screens with greasy fingerprint marks.

MG Cyberster

Okay, the name is a bit clunky and a list price north of £50,000 means the Cyberster isn't as cheap and cheerful as other MGs. However, this two-seater EV sports car is meant to be a 'halo' model for the brand – as you'll spot from its swoopy styling, luxurious cabin and dramatic butterfly-hinged doors. The fastest version will bait supercars from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds and all models will manage a claimed 270 miles on a full charge.

MG4 XPower

The MG4 XPower revives the company's high-performance brand in electrifying style. It starts out as a normal MG4 battery-powered hatchback with all the same benefits – decent practicality, good build quality, lots of equipment – and then adds a frankly stupid amount of power. This sensible five-seater has 429hp and four-wheel drive thanks to a motor on each axle, and will catapult from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds.
