New MG S6 EV: price, specs & release date

If you like the look of the new MG S6, you can order one now. But it’s not cheap.

The new MG S6 starts at £37,995, while the upgraded trim level is another three grand and the dual-motor performance model is £43,995. That means all Trophy models are subject to the luxury car tax – something you almost certainly wouldn’t expect from a value-focused brand like MG.

If you’re happy to pay for the Trophy trim, you’ll get a head-up display, cooled front seats, a panoramic glass roof, an 11-speaker sound system and a ventilated wireless phone charger. That’s on top of the standard equipment you get on SE trim, which includes heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, intelligent speed limit assist and lane-keep assist.

A 12.8-inch infotainment system and 10.25-inch digital driver’s display are both standard, too.

All versions of the S6 come with a 77kWh battery, and the standard rear-wheel-drive models return up to 329 miles between charges. The high-performance dual-motor version is four-wheel drive, and its range stands at 301 miles if you drive carefully.

You can fast-charge at up to 144kW, giving a 10-80% charge in 38 minutes.

Standard cars get a 244hp motor for a nippy 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds. The dual-motor version produces a healthy 361hp, with the 0-62mph time dropping to just 5.1 seconds. Both versions top out at 124mph.

But it could be the braking performance that’s even more impressive. MG says the rear-motor versions can stop from 62mph in just 36 metres. For context, the Highway Code suggests that the stopping distance from 60mph for most cars is 55 metres.

The S6 – presumably named after a county north-east of London – promises to be MG’s most practical model to date, with 674 litres of boot space and a 124-litre frunk. Fold the rear seats down and you can fill a van-rivalling 1,910 litres of space. MG says the S6 offers excellent headroom and legroom, which is certainly the case in the petrol-powered MG HS.

It’s the third car to sit on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, after the MG4 and S5. And, like those cars, the S6 has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating – albeit with even better scores. The S6 scored 92% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection.

Available in a new Stratford Gold colour, alongside MG’s existing colour palette of black, grey, silver, white and red, the S6 can be preordered now. We would expect first deliveries to start in the next few months.
