Right. There are now completely different cars called the MG4 available to buy in the UK.
To keep things simple, we’ll call the new MG4 Urban the ‘Urban’ in this article, and we’ll call the model you’re familiar with the ‘MG4’ – even though both are called the MG4.
With the housekeeping out of the way, the Urban introduces some big changes.
Namely, it’s much cheaper than its namesake. The Urban starts from just £23,495, undercutting the MG4 by a whopping £6,500.
That buys you the Comfort Standard Range model, or it’s a £2,000 jump to the Comfort Long Range model. A top-spec Premium Long Range version is £27,995.
We would expect the standard-range battery to offer between 150 and 200 miles on a charge, while the long-range battery is likely to get closer to 250 miles. That would put it in the same ballpark as the Mini Cooper, GWM Ora 03 and BYD Dolphin.
The Urban is smaller and lighter than the MG4. MG calls the Urban a ‘B-segment’ car, which typically refers to the supermini class – although we’d expect the Urban to be a little longer than other B-segment cars such as the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. The MG4, meanwhile, is a C-segment car, which is Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus sized.
A new platform underpins the Urban, and it’s front-wheel drive whereas the MG4 is rear-driven. This has helped to knock over 150kg out of the car; the Urban is 1,520kg, which is about the same as the heaviest Focus.
Like the MG4, the new MG4 Urban has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety score.
Updates to existing MG4

Meanwhile, the MG4 has lost its small battery model. The lineup now starts with the Premium Long Range version, which looks to have replaced the Trophy spec in the current car. We’d expect this version to manage around 280 miles to a charge. Impressively, this car is apparently £2,750 cheaper than the equivalent version of the outgoing car, with prices starting at £29,995.
An extra £3,000 gets you into the Premium Extended Range model, which offers up to 338 miles of range.
If performance is more your thing, the insanely powerful MG4 XPower is only £1,000 more at £33,995.
Across the MG4 range, the updated car looks very similar to before, but reportedly brings ‘stronger technology’ and ‘enhanced cabin quality’.
Judging by this picture, the paint colours you can choose have been updated as well.
