The Renault Megane E-Tech isn’t as ubiquitous as the Volkswagen ID.3 – but it’s arguably more stylish and has a bigger boot.
The good news is that there’s plenty to like about the Megane E-Tech, even if you’re just drawn in by its styling. It’s comfortable, quick, well equipped and has a decent range. But which trim level should you pick – the entry-level Equilibre or the mid-spec Techno?

Specification and standard equipment

The Equilibre was a relatively short-lived trim level that kicked off the Megane E-Tech lineup. Standard equipment for the Equilibre trim includes:
- Heated front seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Keyless entry
- Cruise control and speed limiter
- Automatic wipers and LED headlights
- Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
- Reversing camera and rear parking sensors
- Front and rear USB ports
- Traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist and auto emergency braking
- 18-inch alloy wheels

The Techno trim has been much more popular, probably because it’s the first trim in the Megane E-Tech lineup to benefit from the Google suite of software. That means the built-in sat nav includes chargepoint information and routing, and you get access to the Google Play store and a wide host of apps. Techno trim includes the Equilibre’s kit list plus:
- Auto high-beam assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Blind spot monitoring
- Front parking sensors
- Wireless phone charging
- Driving modes (personalised, sport, eco, comfort)
- Auto-dimming rear-view mirror
- Upgraded rear lighting
- Chrome windowline trim; full-width rear lightbar; tinted rear windows
- 20-inch alloy wheels
Cost and value

The Equilibre trim is generally cheaper than a Megane E-Tech in Techno trim with a similar age and mileage. And it’s likely to go a little bit further on a charge thanks to its smaller wheels.
But the Equilibre misses out on some key functionality – not only the Google cleverness, but also the ability to schedule preheating. The wireless phone mirroring means you don’t miss out on sat nav if you’re got a smartphone, but you can tell that the Equilibre’s home screen could benefit from some additional features.
Which is best?

Choose the Megane E-Tech Equilibre if you want the best possible range figure and you know you can live without the additional functionality of the Techno trim. However, it’s hard to overlook the additional software and the jazzier styling touches of the Techno trim, with its cartoonish 20-inch wheels and full-width rear lightbar making it look like a futuristic concept car. Not to mention it's more widely available so you've got a much wider choice.
