Omoda 7 SUV: price, specs & release date

If you like the Omoda 5 but need something bigger, then the new Omoda 7 sounds like your prayers have been answered.

Omoda has been received well in the UK, but the brand isn’t resting on its laurels. The new Omoda 7 is the fourth model to launch here in two years, and it could be the most popular model yet.

It’s a midsize SUV that’ll rival the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga and Peugeot 3008, among others. The 7 is a bigger car than the keenly received Omoda 5, but far more affordable than the premium-aimed Omoda 9.

Speaking of prices, the Omoda 7 starts at £29,915 with a petrol engine and £32,000 as a plug-in hybrid. For context, the Sportage starts at almost £31,000 and £34,500 respectively, although the MG HS is about £3,000 less than the Omoda if you pick the normal petrol engine.

Your £29,915 buys the Knight trim, which includes a heated steering wheel, two-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, large 19-inch alloy wheels and a six-speaker Sony sound system.

Upgrading to top-spec Noble trim adds six extra speakers, a powered bootlid, 20-inch wheels, an almost 1.5-metre-long sunroof, and front seats that are cooled, powered and 'inspired by gaming chairs'. You also get fragranced air conditioning and four-zone voice control, which haven’t been offered on Omodas over here before.

The 15.6-inch touchscreen, joined by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, features wireless Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, plus a round-view camera with a transparent chassis view – something we’ve enjoyed on the Omoda E5.

It looks to be a practical car for family buyers, with three Isofix points and a 639-litre boot. As with other Omoda cars, there’s a seven-year warranty.

Omoda 7 interior

The plug-in hybrid engine is the most interesting of the two. It’s the same Super Hybrid System (SHS) setup that we’ve seen in previous Omoda, Jaecoo and Chery models. That means you get a large 18.3kWh battery for 56 miles of electric driving, and it’ll prioritise electric driving as much as possible. The total power output is 204hp and the 0-62mph time is 8.4 seconds.

With the SHS, you also get fast-charging so you can top up the battery at a public chargepoint, plus Vehicle-to-Load functionality to power other electricals from the battery.

If you can’t, or don’t want to, plug in, you’re lumbered with a 1.6-litre petrol engine that’s neither fast nor economical.
