Electric SUVs are the flavour of the month – but thankfully you don’t need to spend a fortune to park one on your driveway. We’ve brought together the best picks, featuring affordable nearly new and used cars to give you plenty of choice. At the time of writing, all are available to buy from Motorpoint with warranty cover included.
1. Citroen e-C3 Aircross

The Citroen e-C3 Aircross is a concerted effort to make a new electric SUV cheap. Or rather, good value. You get confident styling, plenty of interior space, a delightfully simple interior and a big boot. There are two versions available: a Standard Range 44kWh one with a maximum range of 188 miles, and an Extended Range one that manages around 250 miles from its 54kWh battery. Standard Range versions will be fine if you’re mainly going to be driving around town and can reliably charge locally.

2. Vauxhall Frontera

You can probably tell that the e-C3 Aircross is related to the Vauxhall Frontera – and the similarities continue under the skin. The touchscreen is just as easy to use, and the batteries and motors are the same too. The reborn Frontera is exceptional value, being marginally cheaper than the Aircross, although the Citroen has a greater focus on comfort than the Vauxhall.

3. Peugeot e-2008
- Range: up to 247 miles
- Fast-charging time: 27 minutes (20-80% at 100kW)
The Peugeot e-2008 is a boldly styled SUV with sculpted surfaces and eye-catching LED lights. Although it’s been on sale for a few years now, the e-2008 still looks and feels fresh. The interior feels very premium for a smallish SUV, with a lot of nice materials and interesting design touches. There’s plenty of passenger and boot space for a small family, too. A 54kWh battery is available, while earlier versions come with a 50kWh battery that promises around 200 miles of range. If this range estimate suits your use case, e-2008s are very affordable indeed.

4. Hyundai Kona Electric
- Range: up to 301 miles
- Fast-charging time: 47 minutes (10-80% at 100kW)
While it’s a little smaller than many of the other cars on this list, the Hyundai Kona Electric is a top choice if you’re after an affordable electric SUV. Hyundai is highly experienced in electric cars, and the economical Kona promises a superb range figure and – more impressively – barely any battery degradation. Reliability seems to be top notch, too, suggesting that the Kona will be a delight to live with. The figures above relate to the 64kWh battery but, if you mainly travel locally, you can save yourself some money by going for the 39kWh battery with its 190-mile range estimate.

5. MG ZS EV

- Fast-charging time: 42 minutes (10-80% at 100kW)
Many cars are improved by an electric powertrain, and nowhere is that more noticeable than in the MG ZS. Instead of an asthmatic, noisy and thirsty petrol engine with a slack manual gearshift, the ZS EV gives you plenty of power in a smooth and quiet delivery. The ZS also scores points for its spacious rear seats and sporty-looking interior, complete with red stitching and houndstooth upholstery. Lovely. As with the Kona, these figures are for the Long Range version, but there’s a cheaper Standard Range version if you can live with its lower range estimate.

6. Kia e-Niro
- Range: up to 282 miles
- Fast-charging time: 54 minutes (0-80% at 100kW)
The Kia e-Niro uses the same powertrain as the Hyundai Kona Electric, so all of the plus points we mentioned there apply here as well. And what the e-Niro loses in styling verve, it makes up for with practicality – the rear seats and boot are both more spacious than the Kona. Plus, Kia’s seven-year warranty means you can still get manufacturer cover on a used e-Niro. If your budget’s a bit healthier, you might be able to stretch to the new car, called the Kia Niro EV.

7. Volkswagen ID.4
- Range: up to 213 miles
- Fast-charging time: 38 minutes (5-80% at 110kW)
If you need a spacious electric SUV that doesn’t cost a fortune, head towards the Volkswagen ID.4. Rear-seat passengers get plenty of room to stretch out, and the 543-litre boot embarrasses most other cars on this list. There is a longer-range ID.4 with a claimed range of over 300 miles to a charge, but it’s considerably more expensive. Like any car on this list, the shorter range option is perfectly fine for longer trips with a bit of planning.

8. Vauxhall Mokka Electric
- Range: up to 250 miles
- Fast-charging time: 27 minutes (20-80% at 100kW)
We were surprised to see that the stylish Vauxhall Mokka Electric is one of the cheapest cars on this list, with early examples kicking off from around £11,000. That buys you the slightly smaller 50kWh battery that enables a maximum range of 209 miles; you’ll need a little more in the budget to get into the newer 54kWh battery with its 250-mile maximum range. Go for a high-spec GS or Ultimate trim level and you’ll enjoy plenty of features that you might not have expected – top-spec cars even get massaging seats!

9. Jaguar I-Pace
- Range: up to 280 miles
- Fast-charging time: 45 minutes (0-80% at 100kW)
A number of luxury electric SUVs are available for not very much money at all – and we’re not just talking about the rare examples with moon miles on the clock either. If you don’t fancy the I-Pace you could look at things like the Audi e-tron or Mercedes EQC instead, but the Jaguar appeals with its large 90kWh battery, sporty shape and its 400hp tower of power. Just remember that luxury cars can still have expensive servicing bills, even if they’re electric.

10. Mazda MX-30
- Range: up to 124 miles
- Fast-charging time: 36 minutes (10-80% at 50kW)
The Mazda MX-30’s limited range figure means it’ll work best as a second car. Thankfully prices are low enough that you could consider adding one to the family alongside a car that can go the distance. Distinctive looks and a comfortable, keen driving experience are part of the MX-30’s appeal – and it’s fairly exclusive too.
