The SEAT Ibiza packs a lot into its compact footprint. It’s really practical for its size, boasts cutting-edge phone connectivity and is even fun to drive.
Benefitting from the same underpinnings as the Volkswagen Polo, the Ibiza is still one of our favourite superminis, despite a growing number of talented rivals. If you’re interested in an Ibiza, here’s how to pick the best model.

SEAT Ibiza models

The current SEAT Ibiza, introduced in 2017, is only available as a five-door hatchback. Almost all have petrol engines, with a choice of trim levels and manual or automatic gearboxes.
Previously, the Ibiza has been available as a three-door hatchback, while the last-shape Ibiza was also offered as an estate. The current-shape model is the basis for the SEAT Arona SUV. Earlier Ibizas were the basis for the SEAT Cordoba, a four-door saloon, and the SEAT Inca panel van.
SEAT Ibiza trim levels

You’ll find examples of the current SEAT Ibiza in the following trim levels:
- SE/ SE Edition – the cheapest way into Ibiza ownership, SE trim boasts cruise control, air conditioning, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and modestly sized alloy wheels
- SE Technology – over SE, this adds a bigger touchscreen with additional functionality such as built-in sat nav
- FR/ FR Edition – sporty FR trim sits on bigger alloy wheels, and comes with exciting red interior accents. Many examples include LED headlights
- FR Sport – sporty styling with extra equipment, including bigger wheels and a big digital instrument cluster
- FR Black Edition – a 2025 special edition with black wheels, black mirrors and a panoramic sunroof
- Xcellence – focuses on extra features rather than sportiness, and is marked out by shiny chrome trim
- Xcellence Lux – goes big on luxury items, such as adaptive cruise control
- Anniversary Limited Edition – celebrating 40 years of the Ibiza, this 2024 edition gains bucket seats, special badging and exclusive alloy wheels
You might also come across SE Design, which boasts a standard-fit panoramic roof, and FR First Edition, which celebrates the first cars produced in FR trim in the Ibiza’s second facelift. Yeah, that makes sense…

Which SEAT Ibiza is the best?

The latest generation of Ibiza is our favourite, because it’s the most spacious and modern feeling of all the Ibizas. Unless you need the cheap insurance afforded by the 1.0-litre ‘MPI’ engines, we’d recommend going for a turbocharged 1.0 or 1.5 TSI engine, because these are still very economical but give you the power for easy driving on main roads or motorways.
Alternatively, look at the 2015-2017 Ibiza, because this version still comes with modern phone mirroring and engines, but most versions will cost less in road tax than the subsequent 2017-on Ibiza.
What is the fastest SEAT Ibiza model?

Third and fourth-generation Ibizas came with a range-topping Cupra model, and the fastest is the 2016 Ibiza Cupra. The one in our picture is the special-edition Bocanegra, meaning 'black mouth'. Once it moved to a turbocharged 1.8 petrol, the Ibiza Cupra had 190hp and hit 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds – which matches the Ford Fiesta ST and the newer Hyundai i20 N.
A Cupra Ibiza concept was shown when Cupra became a separate brand from SEAT, but this never made production.
