The BMW X1 is one of the best posh small SUVs on sale.
It has the desirable look and feel of the larger X3 and X5, in a sensibly sized package with enough space for a family of four. On top of that, it's great to drive with deft handling and rock-solid stability.
We'll explain everything you need to know about the BMW X1, covering the different trim levels available and the different X1 models over time.
BMW X1 models explained

Every BMW X1 has been a five-door, five-seat small family SUV, with a hatchback-style lift-up boot lid. As the '1' in its name suggests, it's the entry-level model in BMW's X-branded SUV range, with the X3, X5 and X7 sitting above it. Second and third-generation X1s have been sold alongside the mechanically related BMW X2, which has slightly sportier bodywork.
There's plenty of small, posh SUVs that the X1 competes against. Typical rivals include the Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA and Range Rover Evoque. You could also consider the Volvo XC40, Mini Countryman, Alfa Romeo Tonale, Cupra Formentor, Lexus UX and Jaguar E-Pace.
BMW X1 trim levels

- Sport – this is the X1's entry-level trim, but it's still generously equipped. Current X1 Sport models get alloy wheels, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, park assist with front/rear sensors and a reversing camera, a powered boot lid, and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- xLine – upgrade trim with larger 18-inch alloys, 'Veganza' faux-leather upholstery, gloss black interior elements and satin aluminium exterior details
- M Sport – gains sportier alloy wheels, a meaner-looking body kit and black exterior details
- M Sport Pro – range-topping trim for standard X1 models with 19-inch alloys, even more black exterior detailing, smoked headlights, front sports seats, M Sport brakes and unique seat belts. Similar to M Sport Premier models launched with the current X1
- M35i – high-performance version with 300hp and a 5.4-second 0-62mph time. Also gains chassis upgrades for better handling

What's the best BMW X1 model?

Ever since it launched, the X1 has ranked near the very top of the small premium SUV class. However, we think the second and third-generation models have been the most competitive in its time on sale. These versions have perfectly blended the upmarket experience you expect from a BMW, with great real-world practicality and fleet-footed handling.
Second-generation cars sold between 2016 and 2022 are fun to drive, easy to use and more than spacious enough for a family of four. What's more, these versions are abundantly available on the used market at just a fraction of their original purchase price.
That said, third-generation X1s sold from 2022 onwards feel substantially more modern inside. They have a more minimalist cabin design and a vast touchscreen that's reasonably easy to use and stacked with features. The driving experience has been softened slightly compared to its predecessor, making it easier to live with everyday.
