New Leapmotor B05: price, specs & release date

Leapmotor’s fourth UK model, called the B05, goes on sale next month.

You’ve already got plenty of choice if you want an electric family hatchback, and now there’s another option: the new Leapmotor B05.

The B05 uses a 67.1kWh battery that’s integrated into the chassis – which brings benefits for rigidity, passenger space and weight. Up to 300 miles is achievable on a full charge. With a maximum fast-charge capacity of 174kW, a 30-80% top-up takes just 17 minutes – although it’s worth remembering that most brands quote a 10-80% figure.

We’re told it has agile and Europe-tuned handling, and there are a few things to get keen drivers interested. The 215hp motor enables a 6.7-second 0-62mph time (matching a Golf GTI) with launch control enabled, the B05 is rear-wheel drive and there’s even a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. We’ll report back when we drive one to see if it lives up to the spec sheet.

As is typical for Chinese-developed cars, the Leapmotor B05 includes a large central touchscreen with impressive processing power. The infotainment system is designed like a smartphone’s interface, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available.

There’s only one trim level with everything thrown in. The B05 includes a panoramic roof, auto LED headlights, a 12-speaker in-house sound system, wireless phone charging and powered front seats (although your passenger doesn’t get the luxury of height adjustment).

Leapmotor says the B05 includes 21 driver assistance systems that combine for Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability.

The B05 is said to offer ‘exceptional’ rear passenger room, although that seems to come at the expense of boot space. Its 345-litre offering is less than you get in its main rivals. With the seats folded, boot space rises to 1,400 litres, while there are various storage zones dotted throughout the cabin.

As we alluded to above, the B05 is joining a crowded market. It’s going up against cars such as the Peugeot E-308, Renault Megane E-Tech, Kia EV4, MG4, Volkswagen ID.3 and Vauxhall Astra Electric.

However, the B05 is cheaper than all of those cars. It starts at £28,995 for retail customers, which includes a £1,500 Leap Grant to match the Government’s Electric Car Grant. Company-car drivers are charged the full £30,495. Alongside this solid Lightning Yellow colour, you can choose from metallic shades of grey, black, silver and dark blue.

Orders for the B05 open in July, and first customer deliveries will follow shortly after.
