What is Stellantis and which car brands are part of it?

Stellantis might sound like a computer programme but it’s one of the most influential groups in the car industry.

In fact, by 2023 it was the world’s fourth-largest carmaker, which might come as a surprise if you’ve only just heard of Stellantis. After all, you won’t find a Stellantis badge on the front of any car on sale. Instead, it’s a group of car brands that makes up nearly half the market.

Who and what is Stellantis?

Stellantis is a publicly owned company that controls 15 car and van brands, as well as a couple of mobility service providers. It was created in a merger between FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and PSA (a French group that included Peugeot and Citroen).

In recent years, it has also partnered with Foxconn (the company that builds iPhones for Apple) to develop semiconductors for the car industry, and has bought a stake in a French company that makes sensors for autonomous driving.

Stellantis oversees carmaking plants in 30 countries, with six factories in France, five in Italy and Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire, UK. Ellesmere Port makes the group’s vans and van-based MPVs for Europe, such as the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Rifter.

To streamline production and keep development costs down, most Stellantis brands share a lot of platform components, engines and parts with other brands in the umbrella. For example, the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine that Peugeot uses is also found in various Vauxhall (and Opel), Citroen, DS and Jeep models.

Stellantis also runs Free2Move, a car-sharing service, and Leasys, a vehicle leasing platform for private and business users (with choices limited to Stellantis car brands). The group has a sales network called Spoticar.

* Stellantis has a majority stake in Leapmotor International, which gives exclusive rights to sell, export and develop Leapmotor cars outside of the brand’s native China.

History of Stellantis

Stellantis was only formed in January 2021, when the two aforementioned automotive groups (PSA and FCA) merged. The merger was agreed in December 2019, with cost savings for the brands involved reported to be €3.7bn.

Major shareholders include the Agnelli family, Peugeot family, French bank Bpifrance and investment company BlackRock.
