Cheapest hybrid cars to buy in 2026

These hybrid cars are cheap to buy and cheap to run – and easy to drive because each one has an automatic gearbox.

We’ve focused on ‘self-charging’ hybrids which don’t need to be plugged in – plug-in hybrids are usually more expensive and are only more efficient if you can regularly keep the battery topped up by charging from the mains. This list is ordered by the cheapest hybrid cars available at our stores.

Best cheap used hybrid cars

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris is a top choice for cheap wheels. Around town, you can achieve nearly 60mpg from the willing engine, and nearly all trim levels get enticing equipment such as a reversing camera and cruise control. This Yaris is a tough cookie, feeling like it’s built to last and boasting an enviable reputation for dependability.

If you’re a cash buyer, this older Yaris makes more sense but, if you’re buying on finance, make sure to also check out the latest Yaris because monthly prices aren’t miles apart. The new Yaris is even more economical and refined.

Hyundai Ioniq

Hyundai’s take on the Toyota Prius formula was one of the first cars to offer a full range of electrified powertrains – you can get the Ioniq in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric guises. The Ioniq Electric is actually the cheapest of the bunch, but of course it needs to be plugged in and its range won’t suit all buyers.

The aerodynamic shape helps the Ioniq Hybrid nudge over 60mpg, despite being roomier than the Yaris above. It’s an easy-going car with a simple-to-use interior and a lot of standard kit.

MG3

As you’ll see below, the MG3 is the cheapest new hybrid car on sale right now. But, by going for a lightly used example, you’ll save even more. And with MG’s long seven-year warranty, you’ll still have peace of mind for the next few years.

The latest MG3 is now one of the best superminis on sale, with a peppy hybrid engine and a spacious, tactile interior. The value for money here is astonishing, and you’ll wonder how MG has managed to cram so much into something that’s so easy to park.

Renault Clio

While some hybrid cars are purely sensible, the Renault Clio shows that you can have style and low running costs in the same package. There’s intricate detailing to take in on the outside, and a clear dashboard layout that perfectly mixes screen real estate with physical controls. You get a few nice materials here and there to lift the ambiance, too.

The E-Tech hybrid engine feels the fastest of all the Clio’s engines, thanks to the input from the electric motor. Around town, the system is keen to use the e-motor as much as possible – Renault reckons it’ll handle 50% of urban driving, which should massively help fuel efficiency. And the regenerative braking mode seems to adapt to the road you’re driving on, making it feel effortless to drive smoothly.

Honda Jazz

It might not have the most youthful reputation, but a used Honda Jazz should be hovering around the top of your shopping list if you want a cheap hybrid car. The Jazz is jaw-droppingly practical for its size, with a huge, airy cabin and Honda’s 'Magic Seats' that flip up to unlock a vast rear storage space.

The Jazz’s styling is just as friendly as its running costs. We saw 67mpg when bimbling through rush-hour traffic, with a driving experience that’s smooth and relaxing. Stick on some easy listening music, and this combination will almost certainly lower your blood pressure.

Renault Captur

The Clio’s bigger brother shares its clever E-Tech hybrid engine, but adds extra space to make it more family friendly. You also get a higher driving position, making it easier to get into and giving you a better view of the road ahead. Impressively, you can pick up a Captur for a similar price to the Clio, making it a great choice if you want a trendy small SUV that doesn’t cost the earth to run.

A sliding rear bench – rare in this part of the market – improves versatility, although the boot is a good size even with the rear seats pushed as far back as they’ll go.

Toyota C-HR

If your next car needs to be economical and eye-catching, go for the Toyota C-HR. Its sharp styling and coupe-like body style make it look like a spaceship – it’s definitely one of the boldest small SUVs.

There are definitely better choices if you’ll regularly have back-seat passengers, but it’s a better experience in the front – the interior is welcoming and feels like it’s built to outlive a cockroach. You won’t need to spend hours working out all the buttons, either.

Kia Niro

Kia Niro in red

Compared to the C-HR, the Kia Niro puts styling quite far down the priority list. It’s still a smartly styled thing, but doesn’t have the pizzazz of the Toyota. But in other areas, the Niro excels.

The interior is modern and full of standard features, and there are a good selection of materials to brighten the place up. Efficient use of space means this compact car boasts enough space for a family, and the hybrid version has a big boot too. What’s more, a long warranty and strong owner satisfaction point to a car that’s a delight to own.

Suzuki S-Cross

The Suzuki S-Cross is one of the bigger options on this list, so it’ll suit you if you want low running costs and plenty of space for people or stuff. The S-Cross is a fairly handsome machine with a bright and simple interior, plus an enviable specification level.

There are two engine options, both with hybrid badging. The 1.5-litre engine is a self-charging hybrid that places a greater reliance on the battery and motor, while the 1.4-litre mild-hybrid behaves more like a standard turbocharged petrol engine. However, their performance and economy stats are pretty similar, and the mild-hybrid even lets you choose a manual gearbox.

Toyota Corolla

If the Yaris above is just a bit too small, the Corolla is the next step up. Passenger space and boot space are both a bit more generous, while the globally best-selling Corolla also gets sharper front-end styling with piercing headlights.

The Corolla is a relaxing and reliable ride, and there are a wide range of trim levels to suit your budget and equipment desires. There’s also the Corolla Touring Sports estate, which adds even more rear-seat space and a vast boot, and the Suzuki Swace – itself a rebadged Corolla estate.

The Toyota Corolla and Suzuki Swace are also made right here in the UK.
