Toyota has finally retired the Aygo’s 1.0-litre petrol engine.
The Toyota Aygo X now features the same 1.5-litre hybrid engine as the Yaris and Yaris Cross, which should give a boost to both fuel economy and CO2 emissions. In fact, Toyota says the new Aygo X will be the lowest-emitting car on sale – excluding plug-in hybrids – at just 86g/km of CO2.
Unless you’re a company-car driver, the increased fuel economy will be of greater importance. Given that the Yaris can manage 64mpg, we’d expect the smaller and lighter Aygo to get close to 70mpg.
You’ll spot the new Aygo X from the front, where there are new L-shaped headlights. The whole front end is new – even the bonnet shutline has been moved. There are new 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheel designs, plus new paint shades such as Cinnamon, Tarragon, Lavender and Jasmine. Two-colour paintwork and a canvas roof are optional.

Mirroring most of the rest of the Toyota range, a new GR Sport trim level has been introduced. Not only does it offer an exclusive mustard-and-black paint scheme, but it gets exclusive GR interior accents and bespoke suspension tuning for “enhanced handling and body roll control”.
Besides the front overhang being 76mm longer than the outgoing Aygo X, there’s no difference in size or practicality. Toyota has shuffled its hybrid system around to fit it in its smallest model, with the battery packs being side-by-side under the back seats (instead of end-on, as in other models) and the 12-volt battery now hiding under the boot floor.

Acceleration is much quicker than before. Toyota quotes a 0-62mph time of under 10 seconds, which is a whopping five seconds less than the current Aygo X with an automatic gearbox. Alongside this, we’re told that the Aygo X has extra sound deadening to make it quieter on the road.
Prices and specs haven’t been revealed yet, but you should expect a noticeable price increase now that the Aygo X only comes with a hybrid engine and an automatic gearbox.
The current car starts at £16,845, while used examples at Motorpoint start from under £11,000 at the time of writing.
