If it’s time to replace your Ford Edge, here’s the list you’ve been looking for.
We’ve brought together five Ford Edge alternatives, each providing a spacious and well-equipped cabin in a car that doesn’t carry the premium badge tax. Of course, you’ll find more choice on our best SUVs and best 4x4s pages.

Toyota RAV4

Better than the Edge for: warranty
Every Ford Edge is now out of its original manufacturer’s warranty and, as the car gets older, you might be having to replace some costly parts. If it’s peace of mind you’re after, there’s nothing like a Toyota. Along with the enviable reputation for reliability, Toyota offers up to 10 years/100,000 miles of warranty cover, provided you get your car serviced at a main dealer. Like the Edge, the RAV4 is a big, chunky five-seat SUV, but its hybrid engines make sure that you’re not constantly at the petrol station.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Better than the Edge for: boot space
There’s nothing wrong with the Edge’s 602-litre boot – you’ve probably got used to having so much space available and maybe you’re not keen to downsize. Despite the Volkswagen Tiguan being noticeably shorter than the Edge (around 20cm), it actually has a boot that’s 50 litres bigger than the Edge’s. So you can carry even more stuff with you, and fit in more parking spaces.

Mazda CX-60

Better than the Edge for: towing capacity
The Edge’s brawny diesel engines and all-wheel-drive option made it a popular towcar, and its 2,000kg towing capacity is plenty for even a large caravan. But there’s no such thing as having too much towing capacity, and the Mazda CX-60 pips the Edge by 500kg. Both the 3.3-litre inline-six diesel and the petrol/electric plug-in-hybrid engines boast this 2,500kg maximum, and all CX-60s come with a beautifully built interior that’s just as posh as any German rival.

Skoda Kodiaq

Better than the Edge for: having seven seats
If there have been times when the five-seat Ford Edge hasn’t fitted everyone in, you should look at a seven-seat SUV to replace it with. One of our favourites is the Skoda Kodiaq, which has a smart cabin, a rock-solid driving experience and a choice of increasingly powerful petrol and diesel engines. The third row of seats folds flat to give you a truly enormous boot, but they add extra flexibility for when you need to take your kids’ friends along as well.

Ford Explorer

Better than the Edge for: low running costs
With fuel prices so high, you might be wincing every time you’re at the pumps. To save some money on fuel, you could go for the plug-in-hybrid Ford Kuga if you want a balance of petrol and electric power, or the Ford Explorer if you’re ready to go fully electric. On the right home tariff, you can charge an Explorer up for a few pounds, which’ll give you up to 374 miles of zero-emission driving until you have to charge again.
