The Renault Symbioz is a little over 4.4 metres long. That puts it is a slightly grey area between small SUVs like the Ford Puma and mid-size models like the Kia Sportage.
As a result, the cabin space falls somewhere between these two segments too. You'll fit adults in the rear fairly comfortably unless they're unusually tall.
With all seats in place, the Symbioz has a 492-litre boot, which is perfectly acceptable by class standards. That should be enough for most families unless you often carry very bulky items.
You can slide the rear seats forward to expand storage to 624 litres. Alternatively, you can fold the rear seats down fully to access a total of 1,582 litres.
Entry-level Symbioz cars come with a 140hp 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine and a manual gearbox. We've liked this engine in other cars and feel confident it'll work effectively in the Symbioz.
That said, the self-charging-hybrid model – badged E-Tech 160 – is the better choice overall. For starters, it's equipped with an automatic gearbox as standard, and the low-down shove from the hybrid motor means it's always butter-smooth when accelerating. It also boosts the mpg figure from the mid-40s to the mid-60s, which should save you money at the petrol pump.
No. Despite its SUV proportions, the Symbioz is much more optimised for on-road travel and is only equipped with front-wheel drive. This is a better choice for most drivers in practice as it makes the car more efficient and more affordable.
If you need to drive in cold and slippery conditions, swapping to a set of winter tyres or all-season tyres will be much more effective than picking a four-wheel-drive car with summer tyres.
