Peugeot is best known for its chic hatchbacks, but the 3008 marked the French manufacturer’s first adventure into SUV territory in the noughties. A great job it did of the 3008 too, with its box-fresh SUV even bagging What Car? magazine’s Car Of The Year.

Now the mid-sized SUV is back and improved for a second-generation. The basics are similar to its pioneering predecessor, so you still get a spacious five-seat hatchback layout, the extra versatility of a raised ride height and a line-up of small and frugal, if surprisingly energetic, petrol and diesel engines. This time though the French have dialled up the desire with sharper design and an extra helping of technology, including the trick iCockpit. It was enough to secure the coveted European Car of the Year award.

Or try these: Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage, Vauxhall Grandland X

Peugeot 3008 Engines

The 3008 gets either a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol or a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel, both with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto gearbox. Unusually, all make the same 131PS power output, but the diesel gets a chunk more torque – long story short, petrols win the performance war (0-62mph in 9.5sec) while diesels blitz the economy drive (a best of up to 60mpg!).

There’s also a choice of two hybrids with up to 40 miles of pure electric driving  – the 3008 Hybrid has a single electric motor on the front axle to boost its 1.5-litre engine, while the top-spec Hybrid 3000 adds another on the rear for all-wheel drive for better performance and better efficiency – officially up to 235mpg on the combined cycle, so long as you plug it in.

Bodystyles

The 3008 is a five-door, five-seat mid-sized SUV. The first generation produced from 2008-2016 was a smart enough looker, but design genius Gilles Vidal transformed the 3008 into a true premium contender for the current generation.

Peugeot 3008 Trim Levels

Peugeot has tinkered with 3008 trims throughout its lifecycle, but the more up-to-date models offer six key trim levels: the standard specification, followed by Active Premium, Allure, Allure Premium, GT and GT Premium.

Standard equipment is strong, with 17-inch alloys, DAB radio, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and privacy glass. Upgrading to Active Premium bags front parking sensors, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a reversing camera. The real fun starts with Allure, which brings extra driver-assist tech, connected 3D navigation and 18-inch alloys and by the time you’ve talked yourself up to GT Premium you’ve got 19-inch alloys, Focal premium hi-fi and a 360-degree reverse parking camera.

Not to forget the super-desirable iCockpit, which Peugeot has generously thrown in as standard across the range. More on that below…

Technology

iCockpit is Peugeot-speak for a fully digital instrument binnacle and touchscreen. iCockpit is standard across the range with a fully customisable 12.3-inch display ahead of the driver, so you can flick between more conventional-looking speedometer and rev counter displays to others that prioritise information such as navigation while still displaying crucial driving information. The central 8-inch touchscreen allows you to control all infotainment functions – it measures 8 inches on earlier examples, and is complemented by piano-key switches that provide easy shortcuts to key functions, including DAB radio.

Driver-assist features including lane-keep assist, front collision warning and auto headlights are standard across the range.

Desirable kit on higher trim levels include Connected Navigation with real-time traffic information, adaptive cruise control and even night vision that can detect animals and pedestrians beyond the range of the headlights and give you a handy advance warning.
