The Peugeot 208 has been one of Britain’s favourite supermini’s since its debut in 2009. The little French hatchback’s success is down to a tempting combination of classy style, affordable running costs and driving dynamics that hit the sweet spot between comfort and fun. In fact, that recipe dates right back to the classic Peugeot 205 of the 1980s, and has endured through 206 and 207 models that gave the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa a tough fight. Today the 208 has moved with the times, adding the kind of smart technology you’d expect of a much bigger car, and even the option to go fully electric. Peugeot 208 Engine Options

For 2012-2019 generation 208s, the three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine is a popular choice – it’s available as a non-turbocharged version that’s fine for urban journeys, but it’s well worth stepping up to the more potent ‘110’ turbocharged version if you’re venturing further. Better still is the four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP, either in ‘165’ tune or as fitted to the brilliant 208 hot hatch. The diesels are all badged HDI and based around a 1.6-litre engine.

The second-generation Peugeot 208 launched in 2019 with either a 1.2-litre turbo offered in three power outputs and badged PureTech, or a 1.5-litre HDI turbodiesel. Unusually, the latest 208 also offers a pure electric e-208, so it’s well worth a look if you’re after a zero-emissions supermini.

While all Peugeot 208s are front-wheel drive, there are both manual and automatic gearboxes, though engine choice can ultimately dictate which is offered.


The Peugeot 208 is a supermini-sized hatchback. The 2012-2019 generation was available in both a three- and five-door bodystyle, but in common with other car makers, Peugeot offers the latest generation as a purely five-door hatchback model due to the higher popularity of this more versatile variant.

Trim Levels

Core trim levels for 2012-2019 models are Active, Allure, Allure Premium, Black Edition and GT Line, though some of the lesser trims are only available with less powerful engines and vice versa.

Active models benefit from air-con, DAB radio, 15-inch alloy wheels and a standard infotainment system (see Technology, below).

  • Allure adds auto headlights/wipers and parking sensors
  • Allure Premium introduces electric rear windows, matt black alloys, a reversing camera and even a panoramic glass roof.
  • Other than the GTI hot hatch, the Black Edition is the only 208 available with a three-door bodyshell. It’s spec is similar to the entry-level model, but extras including 16-inch alloys and gloss black exterior touches will appeal to budget-savvy buyers wanting a dash of extra style.
  • Much like Black Edition, GT Line adds cosmetic enhancements but ups the alloy wheel size to 17 inches and includes eye-catching additions like a chrome exhaust finisher, gloss-black trim and red stitching inside.

The 2019-onwards Peugeot 208 trim levels were tweaked a little shortly after launch, so be sure to check each advert to confirm the spec, but you’re most likely to find Active Premium, Allure, Allure Premium, GT and GT Premium.

  • Active Premium includes 16-inch alloys, air-con, LED headlights and the Peugeot iCockpit (see Technology, below).
  • Allure adds auto LED headlights, and ‘Tri-material Coze leather effect and Isabella cloth’.
  • Allure Premium gets a reversing camera and a 3D version of iCockpit.
  • GT models play host to 17-inch alloys, gloss-black wheel extensions and a Diamond Black roof, but by stepping up to GT Premium you’re treated to keyless entry/start, a tactile Alcantara and ‘Isabella’ cloth mix for the upholstery, plus heated front seats.


All 2012-2018 Peugeot 208s are equipped with a 7.0-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability. 2019-on models are fitted with the Peugeot i-Cockpit and a 7.0-inch touchscreen as a minimum, though from Allure Premium the 3D iCockpit adds a digital driver display. Step up to GT spec and you get the 10-inch touchscreen as standard with 3D navigation, plus a handy reversing camera.
