Focus, Golf, Astra… if the traditional hatchback market feels a little 1998, why not mix things up with the excellent Citroën C4? Introduced in 2021, the new C4 might go head-to-head with regular hatchbacks, but the French car maker has added a splash of five-door coupe style and crossover ruggedness to the recipe. There’s even a pure electric version alongside petrol and diesel options.

The C4 also goes large on Citroën’s trademark comfort, with cushy Progressive Hydraulic Cushions to help the suspension gloss over bumps in the road, and Advanced Comfort seats to help you feel as fresh at the end of a long journey as you did at the start – both of which are standard across the range.

What engine is in my Citroen C4?

Used C4 buyers can choose from three versions of the 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech engine, or two versions of the 1.5-litre BlueHDI turbodiesel. Alternatively, there’s also a pure electric version with a 50kW battery – the ë-C4.

Depending on engine specification, either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes are available (or a single-speed gearbox in the case of the ë-C4). All used Citroen C4s are front-wheel drive.

What is the body style on a Citroen C4?

The C4 is exclusively available with a five-door coupe-crossover bodyshell. Measuring 4360mm from nose-to-tail, the C4 sits between a VW Golf and Ford Focus in terms of length, while a 380-litre boot is a match for the Golf’s with the rear seats in place.

What trim levels are available on a used Citroen C4?

Citroën launched the C4 with Sense, Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus trim levels, and has since added C-Series Edition in place of Shine.

Entry-level Sense features 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, keyless entry and go plus dual-zone air con. Upgrade to Sense Plus for 18-inch bi-tone Aeroblade alloys, automatic air-con, a rear parking camera and electric folding mirrors.

Shine models get a sleeker look with rear privacy glass, plus there’s keyless entry and go, auto high-beam assist, front and rear parking sensors and a heated steering wheel, while Shine Plus upgrades to an uprated audio system with subwoofer, black Siena leather and textile trim, heated front seats with driver’s side electric adjustment, plus a host of extra tech (see Technology, below)

The C-series Edition makes an impact with its distinctive anodised bronze colour pack, plus there’s an uprated audio system, multi-function leather steering wheel as well as front, rear and lateral parking sensors with a reversing camera.

What technology is in a Citroen C4?

You will find a 10-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB, DAB radio and smartphone mirroring is standard across the used C4 range, though you’ll need a minimum of Sense Plus trim to upgrade to TomTom sat-nav and the 5.5-inch full-TFT digital driver display.

All trim levels benefit from driver-assist features including Lane-Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Driver Attention Alert and more. Top-spec Shine Plus upgrades to Highway Driver Assist and Safety Pack Plus, with features including Extended Traffic Sign Recognition and Advanced Active Safety Brake.
