Motorpoint backs world record kindness bid!

22 July 2016 Press Release Derby

The countdown has begun towards Derby reclaiming the title of Britain’s ‘kindest city’ – with help from Motorpoint

“We’re aiming with help from Motorpoint to win it back on September 20 with at least 20,000 acts of random kindness”

The UK’s leading car supermarket, which is headquartered in the city, is supporting the bid by not for profit charity Brilliant Derby on September 20 to carry out more than 20,000 acts of ‘random kindness’ in a single day in order to regain the world record which it lost last year to Bristol.

The project, which is being led by best-selling children’s author Andy Cope and former Derby Mayor Lisa Higginbottom, will see 500 Year 6 pupils from 14 schools across the city, aided by mentors from Motorpoint, mobilise a small army of fellow pupils, teachers, parents and members of the public to carry out as many random acts of kindness in a 24 hour period including a special event in the Market Square organised by the children on the day.

“Our aim is simple – we want our title back!” explains Andy Cope, who is about to complete a PhD in ‘Happiness’ at Loughborough University. “Derby set the record in 2013 with 8,451 acts of random kindness but that was smashed by Bristol in 2015 with 19,917 acts of random kindness. We’re aiming with help from Motorpoint to win it back on September 20 with at least 20,000 acts of random kindness.”

Clare Bell, Head of Learning and Development at Motorpoint, added: “When it comes to acts of random kindness anything goes. It can be anything from holding a door open for someone to paying a compliment through to letting someone out in the traffic or making the whole office a cuppa at work. It doesn’t matter what it is to be honest – it’s the taking part that counts!”

The number of random acts of kindness is scheduled to be revealed on September 23. People will be able to follow the build up to the big day on social media through either the Brilliant Derby or Motorpoint social media pages using the hashtag #KindDerby2016.
