We know what you’re thinking, and we can see the resemblance too.
The Jaecoo 5 does look a bit like a cheap knock-off of a Range Rover.
And deliberately so, we’d imagine. Jaecoo has already pulled the same trick with the larger Jaecoo 7, and has chalked up 8,400 sales in the first half of 2025. That’s more than the entirety of Fiat, Jeep and Polestar ranges.
You might struggle to tell the 5 and the 7 apart. Both have a blocky, upright design with slim headlights and a vast ‘waterfall’ grille.
The smaller Jaecoo 5 starts from £24,505, putting it squarely against the likes of the Volkswagen Taigo, Hyundai Bayon and Skoda Kamiq. That headline price buys you the Pure trim, which gets automatic headlights (halogen, unusually), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Sony sound system and some self-driving tech.
Luxury trim costs £28,000 on the dot, and adds another two speakers to the Pure’s six, plus cooled wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a sunroof and front seats that are cooled, heated and power-adjustable.
The Jaecoo 5 is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine, which produces 147hp. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox marshalls the power. Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes are available.
This is the same engine that’s in the 7, where it offers relatively uncompetitive fuel economy and performance figures of 37mpg and 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds. Both of these should slightly improve for the 5, but rivals can manage 50mpg and quicker acceleration.
We’re told that the 5 has been fine-tuned for UK roads at Chery’s European research and development centre.
An electric Jaecoo 5 EV is due to be announced in the next few weeks.
The petrol car, meanwhile, will begin to be delivered from October 2025.
Jaecoo currently has over 75 UK dealerships, and offers a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty.
