The best large family cars

If you have lots of kids or an active social life – usually mutually exclusive positions – you'll probably need a large family car to haul everyone around.

However, big people movers are often quite expensive. So, we've chosen our 10 favourite large family cars that we think are worth the money.

Once you've chosen, check out the savings on nearly new and used cars from Motorpoint, including a massive choice of seven-seater cars.

Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda Kodiaq in red
  • Spacious cabin with practical details
  • Easygoing driving experience
  • More luxurious than older Skodas

Since its launch, the Skoda Kodiaq has been a go-to choice for families needing a big SUV. It's always been extremely practical and comes stuffed with sensible features like a built-in umbrella and ice-scraper. However, the latest Kodiaq adds luxurious details like stitched upholstery and a marble-like finish on the dashboard, which we prefer to the mechanically related Volkswagen Tayron. It's not exactly a performance car, but all engines have enough power to move the Kodiaq's sizeable frame and the DSG auto gearbox is slick and responsive.

Kia Sorento

Kia Sorento in blue

The Kia Sorento is the most spacious fuel-powered SUV in the brand's lineup, but its £43,000 list price makes it one of the most cost-effective big seven-seaters on the market. Plus, with the car's long seven-year factory warranty, you can buy a lightly used one for much closer to £30,000 with several years of coverage left. Unlike the hybrid-only Hyundai Santa Fe – the Sorento's mechanical cousin – you can still buy the Kia with a diesel engine, making it a great choice for motorway regulars or drivers who tow.

Peugeot 5008

Peugeot 5008 in blue
  • Modern, attractive design
  • Spacious interior
  • Optional EV and plug-in hybrid engines

So many large family cars focus on tough SUV looks – even though they're usually not designed for real off-roading. The Peugeot 5008, on the other hand, is a more artful, modern take on the seven-seat family car. Interior surfaces are covered in tactile cloth materials, while the modern digital dashboard setup sweeps around the driver and is bathed in customisable ambient lighting. Like most cars in this class, the 5008 is very spacious in the first two rows, with the third row best saved for short journeys.

Volkswagen Tayron

Volkswagen Tayron in grey
  • Classy, understated image
  • Comfy ride quality
  • Long-range PHEV version

While we prefer the slightly more premium Skoda Kodiaq, the mechanically related Volkswagen Tayron arguably feels more futuristic with its ultra-minimalist dashboard and snazzy backlit panels on the dash and doors. Since it shares oily bits with the Skoda, the VW drives virtually the same, with decent ride quality and easy, predictable controls. Equally impressive is the Tayron's cabin, which has seating for seven and, even with all seats in use, enough boot space to rival most family hatchbacks.

Dacia Jogger

Dacia Jogger in red
  • Very affordable pricing
  • No-nonsense cabin
  • Smooth optional hybrid engine

You'll notice a common feature of large family cars is their rather sizeable price tag. The Dacia Jogger, however, bucks the trend with brand-new prices less than £20,000, and substantial discounts on used examples with a few miles under their belts. Its rather portly body shape might not stir the soul like a sports car, but this is a serious case of function rather than form. Inside, there's space for adults in all three rows – even the sixth and seven seats – and you can remove the back seats entirely for enough boot space to rival a small van.

Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90 in gold
  • Handsome, timeless design
  • Lots of passenger space
  • Plush upholstery and interior details

This generation of Volvo XC90 has been on sale more than a decade. It received a second facelift in 2024 to keep up with rivals – most of which have had ground-up redesigns in that time. The XC90's longevity is testament to its enduring appeal, with classy, understated styling that isn't as brash as the typical German alternatives. Big families will feel at home in the XC90 with space for tall adults or bulky child seats on the second row, and even enough space for average-sized adults in the third row.

Audi Q7

Audi Q7 in red
  • Massive interior
  • Premium design
  • Slick infotainment system

Like the XC90, the Audi Q7 is another seven-seat SUV with long-lasting appeal, having also launched in 2015. Audi had little reason to change the recipe, either, as the Q7 nails its brief as a large, posh family car. It's longer than direct rivals from Mercedes and BMW, which means your second and third-row passengers have a little extra room to stretch out, and the tall body means lots of headroom and cargo space. Like most modern Audis, the infotainment system is slick and sharp, with high-contrast graphics and quick reactions.

Chery Tiggo 8

Chery Tiggo 8 in green
  • Astonishing value for money
  • Smooth, powerful plug-in hybrid engine
  • Ultra-modern infotainment setup

On paper, there's not much to separate the Chery Tiggo 8 from other cars on this list like the Skoda Kodiaq or Peugeot 5008. Like those cars, this is a spacious, well-equipped seven-seat family SUV with modern technology and a hybridised engine – it even has a seven-year factory warranty. Then you spot that the Tiggo 8 is a massive £10,000 less than those cars and that changes the equation noticeably. There isn't even an obvious tradeoff when picking the Chery, which feels just as robust as its main rivals and possibly even more plush inside.

Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover Discovery in grey
  • Imposing, upmarket image
  • Peerless off-road ability
  • Vast, luxurious cabin

All of the cars on this list make excellent family transporters. But, if you need a family car that can keep going when the road gets rough, the Land Rover Discovery makes an excellent choice. Inside, you have the posh fit and finish you expect from a Land Rover while, underneath, you have heavy-duty driving hardware that makes the Discovery nearly unstoppable off-road. It's a big, imposing car so don't expect to go weaving through urban traffic, but at least this means there's tonnes of space for people and things.

Hyundai Ioniq 9

Hyundai Ioniq 9 in silver
  • Enormous interior
  • Swift, smooth driving experience
  • Luxurious design

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 pulls off a similar trick as the Peugeot 5008 or the mechanically related Kia EV9. Its looks might remind you of a big SUV but this is actually a people carrier in disguise. That means you get a long, wide and tall cabin with seven seats as standard, or you can pick the optional six-seater layout with lavish captain's chairs in the middle row. Its massive 110kWh battery pack means all versions can comfortably cover more than 350 miles on a full charge, and performance from the electric motor is both muscular and refined.
