Citroen C3 Aircross
The Duster built its reputation on being cheap but cheerful – making a virtue of its rugged simplicity. With the latest C3 Aircross, it feels like Citroen's trying to channel the same energy. It's ballooned compared to the old C3 Aircross, and can be optioned with up to seven seats in the cabin. However, its exterior dimensions are still tight enough that it feels at home in the city. You've a choice of turbo petrol, mild-hybrid automatic and fully electric powertrains – all of which are competitively priced against the Duster.

Suzuki S-Cross
The Vitara might be the more familiar nameplate in Suzuki's SUV lineup, but it's the S-Cross that's the larger, more practical model. It's a much better choice as a family car, with proper rear-seat space and a boot that's large enough for most family clobber. Most S-Cross models on the used market are available with a peppy 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine, while more recent models have swapped over to a 1.5-litre self-charging-hybrid setup. Whichever you pick, you're covered by the remainder of Suzuki's 10-year service-activated warranty.

Fiat 600
The latest Fiat 600 marks the reintroduction of the 500's traditional bigger sibling to the brand's lineup. You can see plenty of 500-inspired touches like the friendly round headlights and the oval-shaped dashboard. However, the 600 adds much needed passenger and cargo space that means it can actually serve as a small family car. It also feels more grown up than the 500 on the move, with better ride quality and refinement. Like other cars from the Stellantis empire, the 600 is available with a mild-hybrid setup or as the fully electric 600e.

Jaecoo 5
So far, most of the Dacia Duster's main rivals are also budget-focused models, with cost-saving tactics to keep the purchase price down. Thanks to the insurmountable economies of scale within the Chinese auto industry, it can offer the much more premium-feeling Jaecoo 5 at a similar price to the Dacia. As a result, you get a much posher interior with nicer materials, better tech and a much more desirable design. While it's clearly designed for on-road use, the Duster clearly takes inspiration from old rough-and-tumble 4x4s. MG ZS

This is the sister car to the Citroen C3 Aircross and shares many of that car's virtues. Its boxiness means there's plenty of space despite its compact dimensions. You also have a similar choice of mild-hybrid petrol power or a fully electric model, with the former best for mixed-motoring and the latter well suited to commuting or the school run. While it's quite similar to the Citroen in profile, you'll spot Vauxhall's distinctive 'visor' detail at the front.

Chery Tiggo 4
The Chery Tiggo 4's exceptionally low purchase price would automatically earn it a spot on this list regardless of what the car was like. However, there's much more to this sensible Chinese SUV than just its low cost.
