The top 10 Cupra Formentor alternatives

The Cupra Formentor is one of the sportier SUVs you can buy.

It has the deft handling of a hatchback, with enough practicality to carry the family in comfort. But it's far from the only car in this class that meets those requirements.

We've chosen our 10 favourite Cupra Formentor alternatives, with the majority available as nearly new or used cars for sale at Motorpoint.

Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen T-Roc in yellow

Some of Volkswagen's recent family-car efforts have fallen a bit flat. Iffy material quality and a heavy over-reliance on touchscreen tech meant they weren't as easy to use as older VWs. The new T-Roc, however, is something of a return to form for the brand. Yes, the overbearing touchscreen is still there, but it's now supplemented by a straightforward volume dial and track selector in the centre console. Plus, the irritating touch-sensitive steering-wheel controls have now been exorcised in favour of proper buttons. On the road, the new T-Roc is hushed and comfortable, making it easy to while away the miles.

Ford Capri

Ford Capri in blue

Ford loves winding up its fans right now – resurrecting old, beloved sporty nameplates for its new SUV lineup. As much as we wish it was called something else, the new Capri is still a very well-rounded car. It's a purely electric model based on the same EV tech as the Volkswagen ID.5, but with a blue-oval makeover inside and out. As a result, the ride strikes the same well-judged balance between agility and comfort, while the overall efficiency means all versions claim decent range figures from their mid-sized battery packs.

Mazda CX-30

Mazda CX-30 in red

Like the Formentor, the Mazda CX-30 is an SUV that leans hard towards the sporty end of the spectrum. As a result, you get swoopy, curved bodywork that looks premium and upmarket. This is matched to a cabin decked out in plush materials and doesn't overload you with screens. Due to the CX-30's market positioning, it's a little cheaper than the Formentor. That means you can pick a higher-end trim and upgrade to the more desirable Skyactiv-X engine, which uses clever combustion tech for better performance and economy.

Mercedes GLA

Mercedes GLA in white

Cupra treads a blurry line between mass-market brands and more premium models. If you'd rather push upmarket, consider something like the Mercedes GLA. This is a small SUV based on a similar platform to the A-Class hatchback, which means it sits towards the more affordable end of the Mercedes lineup, while retaining enough practicality to work as a small family car. The driving experience isn't quite as sporty as the Cupra, but the GLA is one of the more comfortable options in this class.

Peugeot 3008

Peugeot 3008 in blue

The Peugeot 3008 has always been one of the more stylish options in this segment. However, the most recent version truly embraces this position, with a gorgeous cabin trimmed in modern textiles and a sweeping infotainment setup that could have come from the USS Enterprise. Its angular styling hides a reasonably spacious cabin, and you have a wide choice of powertrains under the bonnet, including mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid options, plus a fully electric version.

Audi Q3

Audi Q3 in grey

If you want to stick within the VW Group, but fancy something a bit, well… fancier than the Formentor, you could stretch up to the Audi Q3. This is will soon be the smallest SUV in the four-ringed lineup as there are no current plans to replace the Audi Q2. Despite its positioning, there's plenty of space in the cabin for a family of four and all their clobber, plus all the upmarket features you'd expect from a premium option like this. It's more of an all-rounder than the sporty Formentor, which means it'll be hassle-free on long journeys.

Toyota C-HR

Toyota C-HR in silver

The Toyota C-HR feels like it should come from a different brand. Surely sensible Toyota has no business building a swoopy, sporty, dramatic-looking car like this? Nevertheless, the C-HR certainly exists, and it means you get all that famed Toyota reliability and efficiency in a package that stands out in the car park. This second-generation model fixes the bone-shaking ride of its predecessor, while keeping the same light-footed handling. Even the 1.8-litre hybrid engine has been overhauled for better off-the-line responses and performance.

Mini Countryman

Mini Countryman in green

Modern Minis have always had a sporty edge. It wasn't until the latest Countryman, however, that the brand also had something practical enough to go toe-to-toe with cars like the Formentor. Out on the open road, the Countryman is grippy and stable, with the lightning-quick steering Minis are known for. Inside, there's space for adults in both rows and a big boot for holiday gear or flat-pack furniture. But the lasting impression is of the design and materials, with tasteful soft-brass details and its distinctive circular OLED infotainment screen.

Honda ZR-V

Honda ZR-V in red

Sitting between the compact HR-V and the large CR-V, the Honda ZR-V feels like something of a Goldilocks model in the brand's lineup. You get the same intuitive interior and hybrid engine as the excellent Honda Civic, with the latter making the car swift and effortless to drive. Plus, the composed ride and handling makes the ZR-V both easy and satisfying from behind the wheel, if not an outright thrill. Build quality is excellent and you'll still find plenty of physical buttons and dials on the dashboard, so everything's easy to find.

BYD Seal U

BYD Seal U in grey

The BYD Seal U has less of a sporty image than the Formentor, but it has a similarly long and low profile for an SUV. Inside, material and build quality are both impressive for the price, and leave the car feeling more upmarket and less plasticky than the Cupra. Get the Seal U moving and you'll find it's more comfort focused than the Formentor, with a soft ride and more pronounced body roll through corners. Performance is solid from its entirely plug-in-hybrid engine range, with a choice of 218hp or speedy 324hp versions.
