Why buy a used Volkswagen ID.5
The Volkswagen ID.5 takes the sensible ID.4 as a starting point and restyles it into a high-riding coupe. There's minimal compromise to passenger space, and most of the lost cargo volume is situated above the parcel shelf. As a result, the ID.5 is still easy to live with everyday, especially as it has the same stable handling and well-judged ride quality as its fellow ID stablemates.
Popular Volkswagen ID.5 trims for sale at Motorpoint
Volkswagen has frequently changed the ID.5's equipment lineup, so make sure to check the equipment list for the particular car you're looking at. ID.5 trim levels are often made up of a grade such as Style, Tech and Max, plus a pack like Pro or Pro Performance.
- Style – entry-level car but still includes key features like climate control and adaptive cruise control
- Tech – adds enhanced infotainment, active driver assists and cabin detailing
- Max – range-topping trim with fancier interior detailing
- GTX – high-performance version with dual-motor all-wheel drive
Owning a Volkswagen ID.5
You might assume the ID.5's sportier profile than the ID.4 would make it harder to live with, but the differences are pretty marginal. There's still space for adults in the rear seats, with only very tall passengers likely to run out of headroom. Similarly, the boot is virtually unchanged beneath the parcel shelf, so you can still take a pram or a couple of big suitcases. The driving experience is smooth, swift and hushed, making the ID.5 a calm place to tackle traffic.

Volkswagen ID.5 FAQs
The ID.5 falls firmly into the mid-sized category, measuring in at a whisker under 4.6 metres long. Despite seeming visually longer than the boxier ID.4, it's just 15mm longer in practice.
Those proportions mean the ID.5 is a decent choice for carrying passengers or as a family car. Only very tall adults will find they run out of rear headroom.
Measured up to the parcel shelf, the ID.5's boot is 549 litres. That's respectable for the class and should be plenty for most family buyers. Drop the rear seats and you get a 1,561-litre space in total.
All motor setups for the ID.5 are powerful enough to make light work of this bulky SUV. However, our favourite setup is the 286hp (210kW) single-motor version, which feels truly swift and fantastically smooth. Unless you want top-dog bragging rights, the dual-motor GTX version isn't really worth the extra cash over this single-motor model.
For most drivers, the 77kWh battery is a better all-round choice than the 58kWh entry-level version, with the latter's relatively short range making it a better second car or commuter.
Most ID.5 models are two-wheel drive with a single motor powering just the rear wheels. This is a better choice for most drivers, thanks to this setup's greater efficiency and lower cost. Swapping a two-wheel-drive car to a set of winter tyres or all-season tyres is much more effective in cold, slippery conditions than using summer tyres on a four-wheel-drive car.
Right at the top of the ID.5 range is the high-performance GTX. This has a dual-motor setup, with a second unit powering the front axle. As a result, this version has four-wheel drive.
Most ID.5s in the UK come with the bigger 77kWh battery pack. In its most efficient form, this will return up to 352 miles on a full charge, while high-end versions with more features and bigger alloys bring this figure closer to 320 miles.
Standard-range 58kWh versions return up to 271 miles of range. That's probably enough for most drivers' day-to-day needs, but might be a bit limiting if you're planning on travelling long distances.
