The MG 5’s options list is refreshingly simple with only one motor and battery to choose from, and a couple of trim levels. Keep reading to learn more about each.

What MG 5 trim levels are there?

The trim list is nice and straightforward for the MG 5 with just two options and generous amounts of standard kit on both.

Entry-level Excite cars include air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and an infotainment system with sat nav, DAB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Top-spec Exclusive cars gain leather upholstery, heated front seats with electric driver’s adjustment, keyless entry, climate control, automatic wipers and roof rails.

MG 5 interior and technology

Considering the price point and the technology on board, you might expect a budget-basement experience in the cabin but MG’s worked hard to avoid that. There are a few more scratchy plastics than you might find in a premium rival but the leather upholstery in Exclusive models helps lift the ambiance.

The infotainment system on all models includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a built-in sat nav, and is reasonably easy to use – though it’s not quite as intuitive or responsive as the setup you’ll find in an Audi or BMW, for example. The system was upgraded in 2022 with a larger screen.

Interior space is the MG 5’s trump card compared to its electric rivals. You could reasonably use it as a family car, with enough rear space to squeeze child seats into position, and enough legroom if you need to carry adults in the back. Boot space is also head-and-shoulders above comparable EVs, though the load lip is a little higher than some making it a little harder to lift heavy items in.

MG 5 engine range explained

MG 5 115kW 53/61kWh

The MG 5 is powered by a single electric motor driving the front wheels. With 115kW (154hp) on tap, it’s surprisingly nippy and will dash from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, with the inner-city 0-30mph run completed even more rapidly. Early-2021-and-older MG 5s have a 52kWh battery pack for 216 miles of range, while newer cars use a 61kWh pack which stretches this figure to 250 miles. The car can accept up to 50kW from a fast charger, allowing it to get from 0-80% in around 50 minutes. Facelifted 2022 cars upped the maximum charge rate to 100kW, dropping the 0-80% time to 40 minutes.

You’ll only find MG 5 cars in one version and it’s a five-door, five-seat estate with a hatchback boot opening. From late 2021 (71-plate cars), the battery pack grew from 53kWh to 61kWh, which saw claimed range jump from 214 to 250 miles.

The MG 5 received a facelift in mid-2022. The update left the battery and motor unchanged but gave the exterior a fairly substantial refresh, with a completely different front end that ditched the old-fashioned grille in favour of a meaner-looking Robocop-style fascia.

The MG 5 is a little more than 4.5 metres long. That puts it in a similar ballpark to other family estates including the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra – the MG is a few millimetres shorter in length but is a fraction taller in height. Compared to similarly priced EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, the MG5 is noticeably larger. All MG 5s include rear parking sensors and a reversing camera so it shouldn’t be too tricky to park in tight spots.

Passenger space in the MG 5 is on-par with similarly sized fuel-powered cars but outstrips most EVs in the same price range. You’ll find enough room in the back for adults to get comfortable, but elbow room will be limited if you try to squeeze three across the rear row. Thanks to the estate body style, the MG 5’s cargo area will swallow a push chair or a couple of large suitcases with ease, which is substantially more than most electric rivals can handle.

You’ll find only one motor and battery option for the MG 5 and this setup delivers one of the longest claimed driving range at this price. As an added bonus, it’s also one of the quicker models in this segment.

While it might lack the styling flair of some rivals in the affordable EV segment, the MG 5 strikes back with plenty of benefits. The range is impressive for price, the electric motor is reasonably powerful, the interior is positively loaded with equipment and, most importantly to family buyers, the suspension is refreshingly comfortable.

Of course, you still pay a premium for the battery tech under the body work, so there are several fuel-powered options that undercut the MG on price. If you can fit an EV into your life, however, the MG 5 is one of the very best choices at this price.

The MG 5 is a relatively new car so hasn't featured in many reliability surveys. While MG as a brand hasn't fared too well in these reports, we expect the MG 5 to perform better thanks to its electric powertrain which is more mechanically simple than a fuel-powered car.

MG offers a long seven-year factory warranty but, for extra peace of mind, you can purchase an extended warranty that kicks in once the factory coverage runs out. This will protect you in the event of an unexpected electrical or mechanical failure.
