Stand out from the crowd with an Alfa Romeo.
After all, everyone’s got an Audi, BMW or a Mercedes. Alfa Romeo has always captivated enthusiasts but sometimes struggled to sell in big numbers. Its cars are more likely to be bought by your heart rather than your head, and they remain elusive and exclusive.
Opting for the Italian brand over its more obvious rivals marks you out as someone who appreciates characterful cars. You know that cars aren’t just appliances to get you from one dreary meeting to the next. With that in mind, here’s how to pick the best Alfa Romeo model for you.
Alfa Romeo SUVs
Alfa Romeo Junior

Given the rich history of hatchbacks and sports cars, it’s a little disappointing (but unsurprising) that Alfa Romeo is now predominantly an SUV brand. The Junior is snug inside, and quite expensive for what it is – essentially a bag of Fiat and Peugeot parts. But it does look the part and it has a sporty interior, especially if you get a range-topping model with its irresistibly fuzzy suede.
Powered by a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid engine, the petrol Junior is one of the few Alfas in recent history to prioritise fuel efficiency over performance. But when fuel prices are disgustingly high, who can complain about the possibility of 58mpg?

Alfa Romeo Tonale

If the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA leave you feeling… well, nothing at all, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is one of the few SUVs that is marvellous rather than ‘meh’.
As good to drive as it is to gawp at, the Tonale balances comfort with sportiness well. You don’t need to worry that the biggest available engine is only a 1.5-litre, because both engines are powerful enough to compete with rivals and reasonably efficient. We certainly wouldn’t say no to the option of a Busso V6 with chrome inlet pipes, mind… The Tonale also comes as a plug-in hybrid, which is more powerful and manages 40 miles without waking the engine if you keep the battery charged up.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

We all know someone who drinks too much of something – whether it’s pinot noir or Pepsi Max. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s thirst is for 99 RON. If you’re taken in by the Stelvio’s catwalk looks and how it makes every journey feel special, you might be able to overlook its penchant for petrol.
A raft of physical controls mean the interior is easy to get to grips with, and there’s plenty of space inside for four adults to stretch out. The boot is the biggest of any Alfa Romeo, too, so the Stelvio’s the one to pick if you’ve got bulky hobby gear to cart around.

Alfa Romeo saloons
Alfa Romeo Giulia

Recently, the Stelvio and Giulia have been given a stay of execution and are back on sale while Alfa’s Stellantis overlords work out how to get people to actually buy the brand’s cars. The Giulia is jaw-droppingly beautiful and it feels exotic because you’ll only see one once in a blue moon. Forget the BMW 3 Series: the Giulia’s where it’s at if you want a saloon that’s as good to drive as a sports car.

Alfa Romeo electric cars
Alfa Romeo Junior + Junior Veloce

The electric Alfa Junior comes with 156hp and a 54kWh battery, for totally reasonable performance and economy – 0-62mph in nine seconds and around 250 miles of range. It’s by far the cheapest Alfa to run, especially if you can charge at home, and steep initial depreciation makes used examples suddenly quite appealing.
The best-driving Junior is the electric Veloce model, which boasts a chunky 280hp and goodies like a limited-slip differential. You’ll need just 5.9 seconds to hit 62mph from a standstill in this car, which is shod in grippy and high-end Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.
