Our Favourite Cars of 2021

22 December 2021 Blog

As we draw to the close of another year, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to think about which cars have really made an impact over the past 12 months.

We summarise our favourite SUV, hatchback and premium car that we have seen come through our doors during 2021.

SUV Of The Year – Nissan Qashqai

When it comes to choosing a list of the most exciting new car releases of 2021 it’s hard to look past the Nissan Qashqai. Widely regarded as one of the cars that spawned the explosion of the SUV/Crossover market in the early 2000s, the latest generation Qashqai takes all the key ingredients of what made the model so popular and modernises it, with a new exterior facelift and interior changes that help the Qashqai compete against the ever growing competition in the SUV/ Crossover market.

The new exterior refresh features a bold, sharp front grille and more angular LED headlights. It’s a similar story with the redesign of the rear, with modern led rear lights and a tapered rear hatch that makes the Qashqai much more refined than the previous generation.

The interior is where the biggest change can be seen, with more high-quality materials found across the dash, a centre mounted infotainment screen and range topping models featuring Nissan’s new digital cockpit.

Premium Car Of The Year – BMW 2 Series

Whilst not yet available to buy, the new BMW 2 Series is already causing a stir in the industry.

With BMW’s latest range overhaul there have been some controversial styling decisions – most notably on the new BMW 4 series is the new front grille. To say it's big is an understatement and it has definitely split opinion amongst true petrol heads... some say it is their most exciting design yet, others are not so complimentary!

Thankfully, things are far more clear-cut with the new BMW 2 Series. Available as a Coupe, Convertible or as a Gran Coupe, the new 2 series has a more reserved exterior style whilst still carrying BMW’s famous stance.

The new 2 Series features BMW’s class leading digital cockpit, as well as all new ambient interior lighting. Despite being one of the more entry level models in the range, the 2 Series doesn’t feel any less premium than the 3 or 4 Series on which BMW have earned their reputation.

Whilst engine choices are yet to be confirmed, it’s a sure bet that the range topping M235i will return, widely regarded as one of the best handling models in the BMW range it’s the one to watch for next year.

Hatchback Of The Year - Hyundai i20

An unexpected choice when lined up against the plethora of mid-sized hatchbacks available, the i20 stands out for one big reason – there’s so much range in the market that choosing something new, different and unique has such a strong appeal.

With such a competitive market to go up against Hyundai made the brave choice to act against convention, to throw away the rule book and make something that is bold and brave.

The exterior styling of the new i20 is far more interesting and modern than the previous generation, with few details remaining to link it to its predecessor. From a distance, you could easily be fooled into thinking you’re looking at a next generation Mercedes or Audi.

Particular attention was paid in the design to the location of the seats, steering wheel and pedals, and it shows. The interior cabin is perfectly proportioned to make driving as comfortable as possible, a task which the new i20 easily delivers on.
