Modern cars are far more reliable than their predecessors.
That doesn't mean they're immune to the odd hiccup as they age, however.
So we've chosen 10 SUVs that'll deliver years of hassle-free motoring, with a proven track record and generous warranty cover. They're also impressively practical and stuffed with family-friendly features to make all those miles as easy as possible.
Most are available as great-value nearly new and used cars from Motorpoint.
Toyota C-HR

Toyota is arguably the gold standard for reliability. That makes the Toyota C-HR a great choice if you need a small SUV that won't let you down. It gets lots of sensible stuff right, but the C-HR also appeals to your senses with dramatic styling. Toyota's hybrid engines are legendarily robust and offer a little more poke than you might expect, especially if you pick a 2.0-litre model. Plus, the C-HR automatically qualifies for Toyota's 10-year service activated warranty if you use the company's own service centres.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage is never far from the top of Britain's best-selling car list. Its popularity is pretty obvious – this is a practical, family-sized SUV with a long standard equipment list. There's a choice of affordable petrol and efficient hybrid engines under the bonnet, and everything's backed by the brand's reputation for dependability and Kia's long seven-year factory warranty. It also cuts a much sharper form than older Sportages, with bold LED exterior lighting and a broad, snouty front grille.

Honda HR-V

Like Toyota, Honda has earned a reputation for building cars that keep going for many years with just regular maintenance. The HR-V is the smallest SUV in the brand's lineup, but it's still an excellent choice for families. There's enough space in the back for bulky child seats, and enough capacity in the boot for a pushchair and a few extra bags. Best of all, however, is the smooth hybrid setup, which delivers rapid off-the-line response from the electric motor, backed up by excellent economy when the engine kicks in.

Dacia Duster

Since it launched in the UK, Dacia's whole brand image has been built around its simple, back-to-basics approach. That's kept its cars' prices down and reduced the likelihood of failures by eliminating unnecessary parts. The Duster is still one of its best all-round models, with plenty of space for a family of four and all their luggage. This latest model is also the most grown up Duster so far, with a calm, comfortable driving experience and an ergonomic cabin where form elegantly follows function.

Lexus LBX

Any Lexus could secure a spot on this list, but we really like its most recent SUV model – the compact LBX. This city-friendly SUV shares its bones with the Toyota Yaris Cross and, like that car, is just about big enough to work as a small family car. The proven hybrid setup delivers excellent fuel economy, even if you stick to mostly urban driving, and is extremely easy to drive in busy traffic. Like all Lexus models, the LBX also benefits from the brand's 10-year service-activated warranty, which is one of the longest in the industry.

Hyundai Kona

Many models from Hyundai's lineup could readily have taken this spot, but we're highlighting the versatile Kona SUV. This is a fairly compact model so it's easy to park, but it's still large enough for family buyers with decent rear-seat space and a useful boot. There's a choice of petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains – all of which are smooth and easy to use. Hyundai's built a strong reputation for dependability so you can count on many trouble-free miles in the Kona, with the added reassurance of Hyundai's five-year warranty.

MG HS

The renewed MG has drastically improved the quality of its cars with each new generation. Not only is the latest HS much better to drive than the outgoing model, it's also more luxurious inside and more desirable outside. There's a choice of turbo petrol engines and both self-charging-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models, with the latter being both impressively powerful and frugal. However, the cherry on the cake comes in the form of MG's seven-year manufacturer warranty, which is among the most generous coverage in the industry.

Skoda Karoq

Of all the Volkswagen-Group brands, it's no-nonsense Skoda that tends to perform best in reliability surveys. And, even among all the talented cars in the Czech company's lineup, the Skoda Karoq stands as one of the best. It takes up scarcely any more space on the road than a hatchback like the Ford Focus, but it has a enormous cave for a cabin with enough space for lofty adults in every seat and a boot that'll swallow even the porkiest of pooches. Plus, using parts from lots of other VW-Groups brands means replacements are readily available.

Mini Countryman

Older 'new' Minis don't enjoy a great reputation for longevity, but the brand's scores have substantially improved across several more recent reliability surveys. It's great news that newer models like the Mini Countryman are so durable because you can enjoy their laundry list of talents for even longer. You get enough space for a small family, top-drawer build quality, quirky styling, and a well-rounded but distinctly sporty driving experience that turns every trip into an occasion. The latest model is now offered with either petrol or full-electric power.

Toyota RAV4
If the C-HR is a little soft and you'd prefer an SUV with a squarer jawline, check out the Toyota RAV4. This tough SUV is a better choice too, if you regularly carry rear passengers or bulky cargo thanks to its larger, more spacious body. It's a little pricy compared to some rivals, but that's because values on the used market remain stubbornly high thanks to the car's excellent reliability reputation – backed by Toyota's warranty that offers up to 10 years' coverage. Don't dismiss the 2.5-litre hybrid engine as some tree-hugging slow-poke, either, because the strong electric motor does most of the low-speed driving, giving you EV-like grunt and responsiveness.
