The Chery Tiggo 7 is aimed squarely at the UK's most popular car segment – the mid-size family SUV.
That means it has loads of competition. Virtually all major manufacturers have at least one direct SUV rival to the Chery. We've picked 10 of the best Chery Tiggo 7 alternatives and listed them here.
To be clear, these are rivals based on size and positioning. Almost none of these cars can match the Tiggo 7's astonishingly low starting price – though they might get closer once they become used cars.

Citroen C5 Aircross

So many SUVs try too hard to be sporty, which makes the softly sprung Citroen C5 Aircross feel like a breath of fresh air. This is a family hauler designed to make the miles melt away with a cushioned ride quality and a spacious, comfortable cabin. Older C5 Aircross models had three separate rear seats, which might be more useful for some families, but the new car's more traditional bench seat improves comfort for the outer rear seats. There's also a choice of mild-hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and fully electric drivetrains.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage makes regular appearances on the list of the UK's best-selling cars. It's easy to see why, too – this family SUV is most things to most buyers. There's a choice of petrol, self-charging-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid engines, plus a selection of well-equipped trim levels. On the road, the Sportage feels solid and substantial, with easy controls and well-rounded handling. The reassurance continues for owners thanks to Kia's seven-year factory warranty, which automatically transfers to each new owner while it's active.

Dacia Bigster

The recipe for the Dacia Bigster is pretty simple. Start with the already excellent Dacia Duster, then make it big(ster). The result is a car that has all the easygoing, robust appeal of the Duster, but with even more space for passengers and cargo. Dacia's resisted temptation to stick a vestigial third row of seats in the boot, instead leaving the Bigster to be a stretched-out five-seater so even tall adults can lounge out in the back seats. Our preferred hybrid Bigster is priced pretty close to the Tiggo 7 PHEV, though can't match the Chery's more plush cabin.

Jaecoo 7

Jaecoo, along with sister company Omoda, are actually sub-brands of the wider Chery group. That means many engines and oily bits are shared between Chery and the Jaecoo/Omoda lineups. Its the outside styling that matters most to the Jaecoo's appeal, however, with square-jawed looks that mimic a familiar British luxury brand. Petrol versions of the 7 are pricier than the Tiggo 7 but hybrid models are priced very similarly, though it's worth pointing out that the Jaecoo is a touch smaller and less practical than the Tiggo 7.

Volkswagen Tiguan

If you need a car from the Tiggo 7's segment, but want a more familiar badge on the bonnet, check out the Volkswagen Tiguan. This is VW's answer to the family car question, with a well-rounded ownership experience that balances comfort, ease of use and understated kerb appeal. Prices are substantially higher than the Chery, but that's the cost of buying from an established and well-known manufacturer. We're not totally sold on the Tiguan's screen-dependent interior, though the Tiggo 7's setup is similarly stripped-back.

Ford Kuga

The Tiggo 7 has lots of plus points including its value for money and long equipment list. What it lacks, however, is driver appeal – a criticism we could fairly make of most cars in this segment. So, if you crave an engaging driving experience for your sensible family SUV, you could do a lot worse than the Ford Kuga. This spacious option is the largest car the Blue Oval sells in the UK, available in sporty ST-Line and off-road-themed Active trims. On the road, the Kuga is poised, balanced and agile, and even the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol is a gutsy little engine that's fun to wring out.

Nissan Qashqai

The UK-built Nissan Qashqai might be the answer to your complaints if you don't fancy a Chinese-made car. There's no single area where the Qashqai excels, instead simply delivering a solid experience across a wide range of metrics. It's comfortable and easy to control on the UK's roads, with decent practicality and a sensible choice of standard kit. Turbo petrol models are relatively affordable, especially once they hit the used market, or you can pick the E-Power series hybrid for a smooth, EV-like driving experience with the convenience of simply refuelling with petrol.

Skoda Karoq

Compared to other cars here, the Skoda Karoq is far from a spring chicken. It's approaching 10 years on sale, sharing its platform with the previous-generation Volkswagen Tiguan. However, its continued success is testament to how right Skoda got the Karoq in the first place. There's the excellent practicality, with the Karoq's tall, boxy bodywork unlocking lots of interior space. Then there's the effortless user experience, with a simple dashboard layout and totally fuss-free driving experience. Finally, there are the smooth petrol and diesel engines ideally suited to drivers who cover mixed-motoring or long-distance journeys respectively.

Renault Austral

The Austral is Renault's entry into this popular class, and it's gone all-in on its clever self-charging hybrid technology. As a result, you get a punchy 200hp total output, plus swift reactions from the car's electric motor – all in a package that's extremely smooth and efficient during real-world driving. Add to that the Austral's well-judged, composed ride quality and this is a very easy car to cover long distances in. You'll hear few complaints from your passengers too, thanks to the car's spacious cabin and its attractive, modern interior styling.

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is the sister car to the Kia Sportage and shares many of that car's plus points. That means it's spacious, easy to use and comes with a broad choice of petrol and hybrid engines. The Hyundai's look is even more exaggerated than the Kia, with an intricate front-end treatment with segmented headlights that flow seamlessly into the front grille. As you'd hope, passenger space is plentiful and there's more than enough room in the boot for a pushchair or medium-sized dog.
