Volkswagen Polo

Perhaps the most obvious Fabia rival is its cousin from the wider VW Group – the Volkswagen Polo. They're based on the same platform and have virtually the same choice of petrol engines under the bonnet. In theory, the Polo is the more premium of the two cars but, in practice, it's more of a tie with both feeling solid and well-made. On the road, the Polo is a fraction sportier than the Fabia relatively speaking, though both cars generally ride well for their size. As with the Skoda, we think the Polo is best enjoyed with the optional DSG automatic gearbox.

Ford Fiesta

You can't buy the Ford Fiesta brand new anymore, but there's still a wide selection of nearly new and used examples. It feels a bit more plasticky inside than the Skoda, and the cabin design is clearly a generation older. On the plus side, however, there are lots of obvious physical buttons and dials, so everything's very easy to find. Any reservations you might have about the Fiesta are quickly washed away once you get it on the open road. The handling is agile, the controls are precise, and it still rides pretty well despite its athleticism.

Renault Clio

A few years ago, the Renault Clio didn't have an obvious USP. The Fabia was sensible, the Polo was posh, the Fiesta was fun, but the Clio's appeal wasn't so easily summarised. However, recent Clios seem to have embraced being the 'adult' in the room. They have sophisticated interiors trimmed in tasteful materials, and soft, cushioned suspension helping the car feel like a much bigger, more luxurious model. We're also big fans of Renault's infotainment software, which is one of the easiest, most intuitive setups on the market.

MG3

The old MG3 was good at one thing – being cheap. This totally overhauled new version, however, is a bit of a revelation. There's now an affordable basic petrol model, but the current MG3 first launched exclusively with the Hybrid+ 1.5-litre engine. This self-charging-hybrid setup has lots of grunty electric assistance, so the car feels swift and responsive in stop-start traffic, all while returning frugal mpg figures. Material quality and design has taken a big leap too, and you also benefit from a long kit list and MG's seven-year warranty.

Peugeot 208

Like the Clio, the Peugeot 208 got fed up with being 'just another' small hatchback, and has jumped further upmarket to stand out. The glow-up is pretty successful too, with a modern, angular design inside and Peugeot's signature 'feline' details outside. There are basic petrol models or versions that add some noticeable mild-hybrid assistance to proceedings, as well as a fully electric model that can go more than 200 miles on a charge. Many drivers love the 208's quirky small steering wheel, but double check it fits your body shape before deciding.

Vauxhall Corsa

You can always count on the Vauxhall Corsa to focus on what matters to buyers. As a result, most Corsa models are keenly priced versus rivals, and always come with generous standard equipment. You'll also find plenty on the used market in SRi and GS trims, which get big alloy wheels and a sportier look. Mechanically, it's related to the Peugeot 208, so there's a similar choice of turbo and non-turbo petrol engines, with the former making the lightweight Corsa feel pleasantly peppy. Keep an eye out for well-priced electric versions, too.

Honda Jazz

Skoda is the king of practicality. But, if there's one car that can challenge the Fabia's throne in the small-hatch class, it's the Honda Jazz. By taking a fastidious approach to packaging, Honda's shoved all the Jazz's running gear under its stubby little bonnet. That means most of the body is devoted to passenger and cargo space, which is why the Jazz is so remarkably practical considering its small stature. The 1.5-litre self-charging-hybrid engine is smooth and easygoing, and smart features like its 'Magic Seats' help set it apart from the crowd.

Mini Cooper 5-Door

The latest Mini arrived in 2024, now wearing 'Cooper' as a model name rather than just an engine designation. You'd be forgiven for thinking very little has changed over the old Mini Hatchback from the outside, and you'd be partially right. Engine-powered Mini Coopers are more of a heavy update of the old car, while the new electric version sits on its own platform. Either way, step in and you'll spot the interior has been totally redesigned with attractive, modern textiles, tasteful brass details, and a distinctive, pin-sharp circular OLED infotainment screen.

SEAT Ibiza

The SEAT Ibiza is another VW Group car that shares oily bits with the Fabia. However, the Ibiza's focus is more on style, with sharp, eye-catching details and more aggressive, angular bodywork. Despite all the sporty pretension, though, the Ibiza is similarly sensible to its stablemates as an ownership proposition. That means it's still one of the more spacious superminis on sale, with useable rear seats and a boot that's just big enough for the weekly shop. Fizzy TSI petrol engines suit the Ibiza well, as does the slick DSG auto gearbox.

Hyundai i20

Despite all the big hitters in this class, the Hyundai i20 continues to hold its own corner of the market. It's an attractive little car with clean styling lines and a clearly defined 'face', which borrows details from bigger Hyundai models. Elsewhere, the i20 presents a solid report card – smooth, efficient petrol engines, a decent equipment list, and practicality that's competitive with direct rivals. Build quality is reassuringly robust and you also have extra protection in the form of Hyundai's five-year warranty.
