Why buy a used Volkswagen Polo?

The Volkswagen Polo is the perfect small hatchback if you want something that feels like a big car. That means grown-up refinement and high-speed composure, and all the high-tech features you'd find in larger, fancier cars. It's not quite spacious enough to work as a full family car, but it's still one of the most practical models in this class with decent rear-seat space and a boot that's more than a match for a big weekly shop.

Popular Volkswagen Polo trims for sale at Motorpoint

For pre-facelift cars built until late 2021, entry-level S trim includes air conditioning, automatic emergency braking, and a basic touchscreen infotainment system. SE adds alloy wheels, a variable-height boot floor and an upgraded screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Next up is Match with all-round parking sensors and tinted rear windows. Beats trim gains unique stripes on the bodywork and part-faux-leather sports seats, plus a 300-watt Beats sound system.

At the top of the range is SEL with chrome detailing, upgraded upholstery and a fully featured infotainment system, then sporty R-Line with larger alloy wheels and a more aggressive body kit.

Post-facelift cars all include smartphone mirroring as standard, with Life trim featuring alloy wheels and air conditioning plus adaptive cruise control on 95hp engines and up.

Style adds posh auto LED headlights, interior ambient lighting, larger alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, front sports seats and two-zone climate control. Match and R-Line trims also remained part of the facelift lineup.

Above all sits the GTI hot hatch with a host of performance upgrades, as well as GTI+ models which add premium touches including a digital dashboard and keyless entry.

Volkswagen Polo practicality and boot space

Despite being a small hatchback, the Polo is impressively practical for its size. Adults won't exactly be comfortable in the back seats, but they will fit – more than can be said for many other cars in this class.

At less than 4.1 metres long, the Polo is compact but just a fraction larger than competitors like the Ford Fiesta, Mini 5-door and SEAT Ibiza. Nevertheless, it's easy to park, aided by standard-fit parking sensors on almost all recent models.

The Polo's boot measures 351 litres below the parcel shelf. That's one of the best figures in this class and means it's more than a match for a big shopping trip or a small holiday.

Owning a used Volkswagen Polo

Polo ownership is all about keeping things easy, whether that's the driving experience or just using the car's features. It's calm and composed on the road, with better ride quality than most cars in this class, and you'll rarely find yourself hunting about the dashboard for the function you want. Running costs are low across the board if you avoid the rapid Polo GTI, with fuel consumption and insurance groupings being nice and low. Of course, you'll also be saving thousands on the brand-new price if you pick a nearly new or used Polo. Read our full Volkswagen Polo review.

Several of the Polos rivals have also been around for a while now. Cross-shop it against cars like the Ford Fiesta, Skoda Fabia, SEAT Ibiza, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall Corsa. You could also consider stretching your budget to models like the Audi A1 and Mini Hatchback.
