The Toyota Aygo X (pronounced i-go cross) is the replacement for the Aygo. Its new X is joined by a raised ride height and a chunky body kit, as the Japanese brand tries to convince buyers that the diminutive Aygo X is actually a rufty-tufty SUV. The Toyota Aygo X came onto the market in 2022, and quickly found favour with buyers looking for a cheap and stylish runabout. All Aygo Xs have five doors, but you’ll find some with a folding fabric roof that gives some of the benefits of a convertible without the associated drawbacks. If you’re considering buying a used Aygo X, also check out its Aygo predecessor – this slightly older car is often very affordable.
There’s only one engine to choose, so the best engine is the 1.0-litre petrol. It would have been interesting to see an electrified Aygo X, but that would have pushed the price up to the point where you might as well get the bigger Yaris.
At 3.7 metres long, the Toyota Aygo X slots into the gap between the smaller Fiat 500 and superminis like the Yaris and Ford Fiesta. Its crossover vibe isn’t just for show, as the driver’s seat is mounted higher than before and so it’s easier to get in and out. The front seats are more spacious than in the older Aygo, and the boot is much bigger too – the Aygo X’s 231-litre boot is 60 litres more than before.
