Why buy a used Peugeot e-208?

To the untrained eye, the Peugeot e-208 looks basically the same as the fuel-powered 208. That means this is a city-friendly electric car with all the usual EV benefits – low running costs, excellent refinement and smooth, swift acceleration – but it doesn't shout about its battery-powered status. Brand-new e-208s are pricier than regular 208s but, on the used market, the EV version is often the same price or more affordable. As our EV depreciation guide explains, this is because EVs tend to lose value the fastest in the first 12 months, making them a steal for the second owner.

Popular Peugeot e-208 trims for sale at Motorpoint

The Peugeot e-208 is available in the same trim levels as the regular 208. You get a choice of Active, Allure and GT trims.

Active gets bright LED headlights, automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, USB and USB-C sockets, a leather steering wheel and an electric parking brake.

Allure adds alloy wheels, digital dials (Peugeot 3D i-Cockpit, to give them their full name), auto wipers and wireless phone charging.

Top-spec GT nets you bigger wheels and headlights with three eye-catching LED slashes, plus sports seats and lime green stitching.

Owning a used Peugeot e-208

A used Peugeot e-208 is a smart buy for drivers looking for a car for mainly city and suburban use, or a second vehicle. Discounts compared to brand-new models are particularly high for battery-powered versions, so used e-208s are often the same price or cheaper than fuel-powered 208s – while also being faster and automatic as standard. If you can charge at home, your cost-per-mile figure will be exceptionally low and, while you'll still need to service it regularly, there are far fewer moving parts to go wrong in an e-208 compared to an engine-powered car.

The Peugeot e-208 shares the same mechanical parts with the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and the Citroen e-C4. Both of those cars are a bit more affordable than the Peugeot but they feel a little cheaper inside as a result. Other affordable battery-powered hatchbacks include the Nissan Leaf, Mazda MX-30 and Dacia Spring. Check out our picks for the best small electric cars.

FAQs

According to official figures, the Peugeot e-208 manages up to 217 miles of range from a full battery. However, just like in a petrol or diesel car, the range and efficiency you actually get will depend on how and where you drive. Electric cars are also less efficient in colder weather and at motorway speeds, so you might find you have to charge more often in winter or if you do a lot of high-speed driving.

The top speed of the Peugeot e-208 is 93mph provided you’re in the Sport driving mode. So it’s more than capable of driving at motorway speeds.

If you have one or two children and don’t need to carry a lot of bulky things, then the Peugeot e-208 is just about big enough for a family. However, it won’t be suitable as the main family car if you have tall teenagers or if you need to travel with more than one pushchair or lots of suitcases. If you already have one large car for carrying bulky bits, the e-208 could be an excellent second car.

The Peugeot e-208 is fully electric and doesn’t have an engine. It features a 100kW (136hp) electric motor that’s powered by a 50kWh battery.

While it looks expensive as a brand-new car, a nearly new Peugeot e-208 is definitely worth buying. If you’re happy to live without the latest number plate and have a car with a few thousand miles under its wheels, a used e-208 can cost a similar amount to an equivalent petrol car. Provided you can charge at home, the e-208 may save you a lot of money compared to the petrol one.
