Alfa Romeo Giulietta buying guide

About the Alfa Romeo Giulietta

The Alfa Giulietta was quietly retired in 2021 after over a decade on sale. In that time, the styling never changed much – it was always a looker – but the interior became slightly more modern throughout its lifespan. So recent Giuliettas come with a Uconnect touchscreen with all the basic connectivity features you’d expect, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

What versions of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta are there?

The Giulietta has had a good few trim levels throughout its lifespan, but more recent examples are likely to be found in Super, Sport, Sprint and Speciale, as well as Nero Edizione and Veloce. Sport and Sprint get spicy red accents and bigger wheels, but you can also expect a reversing camera, cruise control, DAB radio and alloys.

What features does the Alfa Romeo Giulietta have?

Apart from the clearly stylish design, the Giulietta has a few features you’ll appreciate on the commute. The seats are fantastically upholstered – like an Italian suit, if you’ll pardon the cliché – and the outer rear seats have Isofix points for child seats. There’s plenty of equipment and a simple-to-use interior. An automatic gearbox is available but a slick manual gearbox is more common.

Is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta a good car?

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta doesn’t always stack up well on paper against its rivals, but it has a certain spark to it that might let you forgive its relative age. It’s far more exclusive and more characterful than a VW Golf or a Vauxhall Astra, and has a perky engine and a decent list of features.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta engine range explained

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB petrol

Most modern Giuliettas come with a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine that’s also seen service in the Abarth 595, among other pieces of Italiana. It’s decently quick, hitting 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds despite only having 120hp, although it’ll cost slightly more to run than a small petrol engine in something like a Ford Focus.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.6 JTDM-2 diesel

There’s also a diesel engine that promises around 50mpg when driven carefully. And, with plenty of torque at low revs, the diesel engine gives eager acceleration – even with the same power output as the petrol engine. The diesel engine is much rarer, though, and needs semi-regular long journeys to give the diesel particulate filter (DPF) a chance to clean itself.

FAQs

The Giulietta simply reached the end of its lifespan, having been on sale for over a decade – longer than most cars. It was indirectly replaced by the Alfa Romeo Tonale small SUV.

Giulietta ownership shouldn’t cost considerably more than most similarly sized hatchbacks, although there’s always the worry that an Alfa Romeo might live up to the brand’s hard-to-shake reliability reputation. If you want an Alfa Romeo but are concerned about its dependability, consider taking out an extended warranty when you purchase the car.
