A V5C logbook is an important document that shows who a car's registered keeper is.
You might also be the car's legal owner, but the V5C proves who is responsible for the car's tax and insurance.
And, like all important bits of paper, it's remarkably easy to lose your V5C logbook. So what should you do if you want to sell your car and you no longer have your V5C? This guide explains all…
What is a V5C? Why do you need it?

The V5C confirms who is the registered keeper of a car. That means the person who uses the car, and is responsible for its tax and insurance. They're also on the hook for any driving offences committed in the car.
Being a car's registered keeper doesn't necessarily make you its owner, which is why a V5C is not proof of ownership. If you're still paying off your car's finance, or you've leased the car, you'll only be its keeper and not the legal owner.
Can I sell my car without the V5C logbook?

Yes. It is possible to sell your car without its V5C logbook, but it's generally not a good idea.
Buyers will be extra cautious of a car being sold without a V5C. Many will simply refuse to buy the car, while others might ask for a substantial discount to compensate for the V5C's absence.
The reason for caution is fairly clear. Buying a car without its V5C means extra hurdles for the new owner, as they'll need to apply to the DVLA to be registered as the car's new keeper. This costs money and takes extra time versus simply using the new keeper slip in the existing V5C. There's also no way to prove the car being sold isn't stolen without its official V5C.
Is it illegal to sell my car without the V5C logbook?
No. It's not illegal to sell a car without a V5C logbook.
However, we strongly advise that you tell any potential buyer if you're selling your car without its V5C, as they'll need to take it into account when making you an offer. Springing a missing logbook on a buyer at the last moment is a surefire way to lose a car sale.
The actual best way to sell your car without a V5C

The very best way to sell a car without its V5C is to… not sell the car without its V5C logbook.
If you can't find your car's V5C, it's much easier to use the DVLA's online form to apply for a replacement. The service is quick and simple to use, and it only costs £25 to have a new V5C issued.
This route will definitely be cheaper than whatever discount you have to agree to for a missing V5C. It also gives your buyer much more confidence that the car is legitimate and not stolen.
How to sell your car without a V5C
- Prepare your car for sale as normal
- Inform any potential buyers them that you're selling the car without its V5C logbook
- Be prepared to discount the car's price to make up for the missing V5C
- Complete the sale as normal
- Tell the new buyer they'll need to fill out a V62 form to apply for a new V5C
- Inform the DVLA that you've sold the car. You'll need to tell them:
- The car's make and model
- The car's number plate
- Seller's name and address
- Buyer's name and address
- When the car was sold
Again, this process will be substantially easier if you request a replacement V5C and sell it complete with the car.
How to tell the DVLA you’ve sold your car without its V5C

If you don't have the V5C logbook, you won't be able to complete the new keeper slip that normally informs the DVLA of a vehicle sale. In this case, you'll need to send the DVLA a letter informing them that you've sold the car.
This letter must include your name and address along with the name and address of the person you've sold the car to. In addition, you'll need the car's make, models and number plate, and the date of the sale.
How to replace your V5C
Replacing your V5C logbook is quick and easy, and will make it much easier to sell your car in the long run.
Simply head over to the DVLA's online form and enter your details. Once you've completed the form and paid the £25 fee, a new V5C will be posted to you.
