We're here to make saying goodbye to your old car easy!
This is what you need to know if you decide to sell your car to Motorpoint.
Before the day of sale
- You'll complete a car valuation form
- Pick one of our nationwide stores to drop your car off
- You'll receive an email confirming the sale details, explaining what happens next and what you'll need to bring
- If any details in this email are incorrect, please call our team on 01332 408 605
- You'll also get a phone call from our team confirming what will happen on the day of sale, and giving you the opportunity to ask any additional questions:
- This call will come from a Derby phone number, so keep an eye out for a call from an 01332 phone number
- If you miss this call or still have questions, please call our team on 01332 408 605
On the day of sale
- When you arrive at your chosen Motorpoint store, a member of our team will inspect your car to check it matches the details provided
- We'll complete all the paperwork, and give you with the yellow slip from the V5C document
- You'll need this slip to contact the DVLA and transfer ownership of the car to Motorpoint – we'll guide you through this process

Once you've received your final valuation, you can book an appointment to sell your car at your nearest store as soon as the next day (subject to appointment availability at your nearest Motorpoint store).
This depends on a few factors including the age, mileage and condition of your car. Some colours are also more desirable and may retain more value. Use our valuation tool to see how much you can sell your car for.
Payment will be made into your nominated bank account.
No! You can sell your car to Motorpoint without having to buy another one from us.
You will need to bring the following documents with you to complete the sale:
- Proof of ID – either a photocard driving licence with the address matching that on the V5C or passport and proof of address dated within the past three months
- V5C/Logbook – in the name of the person selling the car
- MOT certificate – minimum one month’s MOT on date of handover
- Spare keys if available
- Service history if available
- A copy of your finance settlement letter if you have outstanding finance to be cleared OR a clearance letter if you have recently paid off any finance on the car
- Bank details, so we can make any payment due to you
You'll need to make sure you cancel your car insurance when you sell your car, or have it transferred to your new vehicle.
Road tax is non-transferrable, so you'll need to contact the DVLA to let them know that you've sold your car. They will then be able to start the process of cancelling and refunding any full months of remaining tax.
You must notify the DVLA of any significant changes to your car. After you have sold your car, you need to give them the full name and address of the buyer. If these details are not updated, sellers may incur legal penalties.
You will need to enter the details for Motorpoint Derby when prompted on the DVLA website, or completing the yellow slip you have been provided when you sell your car in store: Motorpoint Derby, Chartwell Drive, Derby, Derbyshire, DE21 6BZ
Tell the DVLA you have sold your car.
As a seller, you are not responsible for your car after it is sold. You will need to let DVLA know that you’ve sold your car, otherwise you will be liable for anything the new owner should be paying. Your main responsibility when selling is to accurately describe your car.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept sales of cars with private plates.
If you're planning to keep your private plate or assign it to another car, you can apply to have the number removed and sell your car to us using the original plate details.
