Jaecoo SUV model range explained

In less than two years, Jaecoo has become a big seller in the UK – its tech and styling has really struck a chord.

So you’re not alone if you’re considering a Jaecoo for your next car. The brand offers several models, all with chunky 4x4-inspired looks and with a choice of petrol, hybrid and electric power.

Jaecoo models share a lot of parts with Omoda cars, because both are part of the Chery Group umbrella. Jaecoo offers a seven-year warranty for peace of mind in this fledgling brand.

Jaecoo 5

After the runaway success of the J7, the Jaecoo 5 sticks to a similar formula – but it’s a smaller and cheaper model, so it should be a smash hit as well.

Sizewise, the 5 sits between the Nissan Juke and Nissan Qashqai, and it has a large 480-litre boot.

Its ruler-led styling is clearly reminiscent of a Land Rover, and petrol models stand out with a chromed ‘waterfall’ grille.

Jaecoo 5 EV

Aside from being battery powered, the electric 5 stands out by not featuring the cascading grille of the petrol car. Instead, the Jaecoo nameplate is held within a horizontal bar between the rectangular headlights, giving the front end a cleaner, blank-looking appearance.

A 61.1kWh battery enables a maximum range of 248 miles (expect 200 or so in the real world), while Vehicle-to-Load charging is included as standard so you can power small electricals from the car’s battery.

Jaecoo 7

This will be the Jaecoo model you’ll be most familiar with – it was the first Jaecoo to launch in the UK, and in some months it’s been among the best-selling new cars. It’s found favour by looking like a Range Rover but at the price of a Qashqai and with the warranty cover to match a Kia.

Four-wheel drive is available on the petrol one, but we’d struggle to recommend it – the 7 isn’t a go-anywhere vehicle, despite its looks, and the 4x4 system worsens efficiency and performance. Instead, we’d opt for the plug-in hybrid, which offers impressive performance and the promise of 56 miles of electric driving from a fully charged battery. With both battery and petrol tank fully topped up, Jaecoo reckons you’ll manage almost 750 miles of driving before needing to fill up again.

Jaecoo 8

This is Jaecoo’s flagship model: a seven-seat SUV with a plug-in hybrid engine and the performance of a hot hatchback. Thanks to a larger battery than the 7 SHS, the Jaecoo 8 is reportedly capable of 83 miles of electric-only driving. Meanwhile, its 428hp and four-wheel-drive system enable a sub-six-second 0-62mph time. The 8 also promises to be fairly good off-road, thanks to terrain drive modes and lockable differentials.

The 8 goes big on luxury – standard equipment includes a 14-speaker Sony sound system, heated front and middle-row seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 540-degree parking camera. Top-spec models get six seats instead of seven, with a pair of opulent captain’s chairs in the second row.
