Volkswagen ID.4 vs Skoda Enyaq – which is best?

The Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq are two versions of the same recipe.

You’d expect a lot of similarities and there are plenty, but the end results don’t look or feel identical. They’re made by two different chefs in different kitchens, and there are some surprising differences. Such as which of these cars feels more premium.

Here, we’ll compare the Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq, so you can pick which is best for you.

Styling

While neither car has the bold futurism of something like a Hyundai Ioniq 5, they’re both quite smart. The Skoda looks like a ‘normal’ car, with a big fake grille that hides all the driver assistance sensors and whatnot. In comparison, the VW looks more like you’d expect an electric car to, with a smaller bonnet opening and no grille.

Even with some models getting light bars to connect the lamp clusters, the ID.4 looks a little forgettable. Dare we say bland? Early cars were available with bright colours and glossy alloy wheels, and these stand out a bit more. The Skoda, meanwhile, gets chiselled body creases and the option of a SportLine trim with added visual trinketry.

Interior

VW ID.4 vs Skoda Enyaq interior

Going back to our recipe analogy, the Volkswagen ID.4’s interior feels like it’s missing the seasoning compared to the Skoda Enyaq’s interior.

When it launched, the ID.4 came with vivid white and orange upholstery choices. Interesting, if not the most practical for family life. Now, though, the only choice is 50 shades of grey – and not the sexy kind. Considering the upholstery is called ‘Soul Black’, it’s ironic that there isn’t any funk or soul.

The ID.4 and Enyaq use the same infotainment hardware, but somehow the software in VW’s is more confusingly laid out and not as intuitive. There are touch buttons on the steering wheel and silly window switches with a touch panel to switch their functionality between the front and rear windows. Cars built since 2024 have a much improved infotainment system, although the touch panels remain.

Skoda hasn’t tried to reinvent the button, and its interior is much easier to use. There’s a row of buttons beneath the screen for quick access to important functions, and thoughtful touches like the bit of dashboard that juts out so you can rest your wrist on it to use the touchscreen.

The Enyaq might come with a black-and-grey interior as standard, but there are options with tan leather, suede with green piping, and even one with red seatbelts. And the dashboard is draped in tactile cloth or soft-touch materials instead of cheap plastic.

The Enyaq is marginally bigger than the ID.4, but not so much that you’ll struggle to park it. Most versions of these cars come with a reversing camera as standard.

Given that both have the same wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels), rear passenger space is almost identical – so whichever car you pick, you’ll get a lot of it.

The Enyaq’s boot is slightly bigger, although not by enough that it’s likely to be a dealbreaker. It’s the clever features that really set the Enyaq apart, and it’s a wonder that VW doesn’t pinch some of Skoda’s ‘simply clever’ ideas for itself. An umbrella in the door, a parking ticket holder, an integrated ice scraper and more nets than Wimbledon make the Enyaq really useful. Then there’s a big, mostly hidden storage area under the centre console, and dedicated pockets for your phone in the seatbacks.

Range and performance

We’ll keep this fairly short as this is where the two cars are most similar. There’s a 58kWh battery and a long-range 77kWh battery, which should manage around 250 and 320 miles to a charge respectively. Of course, that depends on the efficiency you get and how you drive the car. There’s also an entry-level 52kWh battery that promises 220 miles, which has been available longer on the ID.4.

Both cars have fast-charging speeds of around 130kW, meaning a 10-80% top-up from a motorway charger in half an hour. Both also have powerful four-wheel-drive options, including a range-topping performance model – the Enyaq vRS and ID.4 GTX. Both have 340hp and a 0-62mph time barely north of five seconds – but at the cost of efficiency, and neither are as fun as you’d hope. Best to stick with the better-value models further down the lineup.

Value

The ID.4 typically works out as slightly better value than the Enyaq on the used market, but high-mileage examples of both can be picked up for under £15,000. Nearer £20,000, you’ll have a greater choice of specs and mileages.

As standard, the ID.4 gets LED headlights with high-beam assist, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors at each end, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel – but earlier models miss out on alloy wheels and a reversing camera.

Skoda’s SUV got a bigger touchscreen and alloys, but normal cruise control and no heated seats or steering wheel. Now, it has moved to a more conventional trim level lineup, and a huge amount of kit is now fitted as standard.

Which is best?

Considering that the Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq are all but identical underneath, they feel completely different. We’d pick the Skoda every time – it’s barely any more expensive than the ID.4 but feels vastly more premium and well thought out.
