Now only available as a used car, the Ford Fiesta ST is a fantastic hot hatch that’s stunning to drive.
If you’re searching for your dream Fiesta ST, you’ll have noticed that some are referred to as ST-2 and others as ST-3. The Fiesta ST was sold in two trim levels, with the ST-2 being the standard version and ST-3 being a better-equipped offering. Is the ST-2 the sweet spot of the range, or should you hold out for a top-spec ST-3?
Previous, pre-2018 Ford Fiesta ST models were available in three trim levels, with an ST-1 model kicking off the range. Here, we’re comparing the latest (and last, sadly) shape of Fiesta STs, produced from 2018.

Cost and value

Comparing used car listings, it seems that the ST-2 is a little bit cheaper than an ST-3 with similar age and mileage. Prices are invariably going to overlap with each other, so a set budget is likely to bring up examples of both – if you’re dead-set on the extra equipment an ST-3 brings, you might have to settle for slightly higher mileage or an older plate, for example.
The ST-3 is much more widely available on the used market. We suspect that’s partly due to the inclusion of the Performance Pack with the limited-slip differential, which improves the car’s handling by giving you more grip on the exit of corners. After all, if you’re going to buy a fun-handling car, you might as well choose the one that’s going to be the most fun.
Which is best?
The Fiesta ST-2 is generally a little cheaper to buy and should be marginally more comfortable on broken road surfaces. But comfort is hardly the Fiesta ST’s first priority, and you’re probably expecting a firm ride to go with the car’s fantastic driving experience. Our money would go on the ST-3, mainly for its Performance Pack and the heated seats, but the ST-2 is arguably better value and you’re still getting the essence of the ST experience.
