All of Ford's hatchbacks are great, but we particularly love the Fiesta and Focus – and so do buyers, as these cars have been consistently among the UK's best-selling cars. They're great to drive and both can fit four adults comfortably, while letting you connect your phone to listen to whatever you want and access online features. The Focus is slightly more practical though, and it's available as a roomy estate model, so that's the one we'd pick if we really had to.

Yes, Ford is still very good at making hatchbacks. The Fiesta and Focus offer class-leading handling, good practicality and generous standard equipment. Ford's hatchbacks are available with peppy petrol engines that are capable of 50mpg, and ultra-frugal diesel engines that sip fuel. And despite being sporty, Fords are usually comfortable as well.

Ford hatchbacks should be reliable but, as with any modern car, there's a lot of electronic technology on board that could potentially go wrong. Ford's reputation for reliability is slightly above average, and tens of thousands of owners won't come across any problems whatsoever.
