Fiat Tipo Cross buying guide

What Fiat Tipo Cross trim levels are there?

Tipo Cross is a trim level – there have been other Tipos without the macho body kit. The Cross treatment includes tough wheel arch trim, eye-catching silver bumper decoration and exclusive alloy wheels. Roof rails also come as standard, which not only add to the rugged look but increase practicality, as they make it easier to add bike carriers or a roof box.

Cross trim features a reversing camera, auto high beams, auto wipers and climate control. The list of active safety features is long – there’s adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist, a driver tiredness monitor and more.

Fiat Tipo Cross interior and technology

When the Tipo was developed, the Fiat-Chrysler group oversaw brands like Alfa Romeo, Dodge and Iveco. Fiat rummaged in its parts bin for the Tipo’s interior – the climate control dials are similar to the ones fitted in the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, while the steering wheel controls are used in everything from Iveco supermarket delivery vans to the 707hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

That’s no bad thing in practice, because the Tipo’s interior feels sturdy – like it’ll handle years of family use without falling apart. All its controls are very easy to operate, too. Like the Fiat 500, there’s a city steering mode that makes it super easy to manoeuvre at low speeds.

The seven-inch infotainment system feels like it could do with some caffeine, as it could definitely be quicker to respond to your inputs. But it has all the main features you need, including sat nav with live traffic updates, DAB radio and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto – so you can use your phone’s apps on the car’s screen if you’d rather bypass Fiat’s Uconnect system.

Fiat Tipo Cross boot space and dimensions

Get the ruler out and you’ll find that the Tipo Cross is just under 4.4 metres long, which is about the same as a Ford Focus. Rear passenger space is perfectly decent, and the boot’s a good size at 440 litres. That’s about 70 litres more than a Focus or Volkswagen Golf.

Fiat Tipo Cross engine range explained

Fiat Tipo Cross 1.0 petrol

The entry-level engine has 100hp and a fairly leisurely 0-62mph time of 12.2 seconds, but it sits in a low insurance group and officially manages 51mpg. Along with the Tipo’s good-value purchase price, it could be a cheap-to-run car with space for the family.

Fiat Tipo Cross 1.5 Hybrid 48V

The Tipo Cross is now available with a more powerful engine that features mild-hybrid technology to reduce fuel consumption. It’s expensive as a brand-new car but well priced as a used car, and the good news continues with the promise of 53mpg. That’s coupled with a nippy 9.3-second acceleration sprint – although you’ll be paying a little more in insurance costs.

Fiat Tipo Cross FAQs

Unlike the Fiat Panda Cross, which is four-wheel drive, the Tipo Cross is still front-wheel drive. The Cross additions are essentially a styling package, although some users may find the slightly higher ride height appealing. Fiat added the Cross to the Tipo lineup in 2021.

Sometimes overlooked in favour of more established rivals, the Fiat Tipo Cross is a good car for the amount of money you’re paying. It’s inexpensive transport that gets rugged styling and a good selection of standard equipment, all with strong practicality and low running costs.
